UMW Administrative Faculty Member and Alumni to Speak at Virginia Festival of the Book

A University of Mary Washington administrative faculty member and two alumni will speak at the 18th annual Virginia Festival of the Book, to be held March 21 through 25 in Charlottesville. Charles J. Shields, associate director of the Chappell Great Lives Lecture Series and Kelly Cherry ’61 and Matt Paxton ’97, will participate in readings, discussion sessions and presentations. Charles J. Shields will participate, along with two other authors, in the discussion session “Literary Icons - Their Lives, Their Works: Vonnegut, Tolstoy and E.B. White” on Friday, March 23 at 4 p.m. in the University of Virginia (UVa) Bookstore at 400 Emmet Street South. Shields also will give his presentation “And So It Goes” for students at two local high schools on the same day. ‘Great Lives’ Makes its iTunes Debut

Since 2004, the Chappell Great Lives lecture series has brought noted biographers and professors to lecture in George Washington Hall’s Dodd Auditorium. Now, the same lectures are available anywhere, through the iTunes U app for iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, as well as on a Mac or PC using iTunes. The free app is home to courses and classroom materials from colleges and universities around the world, as well as lectures and presentations like Great Lives. Tim Owens, instructional technology specialist at UMW, said the move to iTunes U will help expand the reach of the lecture series beyond Mary Washington. On Friday, Feb. 24, Charles J. Shields' lecture on Kurt Vonnegut became the first Great Lives lecture available for download. Each Friday, another of the 2012 lectures will be released. UMW Great Lives Associate Director Discusses Kurt Vonnegut on Public Radio Program

University of Mary Washington Associate Director of the Chappell Great Lives Lecture Series Charles J. Shields will explore how Kurt Vonnegut’s experience as a World War II prisoner of war influenced his later writing during an interview on the “With Good Reason” public radio program beginning Saturday, January 28. The interview can be heard on January 28 at 4:30 p.m. on WCVE 88.9 FM and on Sunday, January 29 at 7 p.m. and Monday, January 30 at 12:30 a.m. on WAMU 88.5 FM. The segment, “From Combat to College,” is expected to be online beginning the week of the show at Shields’ biography, “And So It Goes: Kurt Vonnegut, A Life,” is the first full-length, definitive biography of Vonnegut based on interviews with him and 125 of his contemporaries, friends and family members.
