Business Executive, Author Steve Pemberton Addresses UMW Graduates, May 11

Steve Pemberton encouraged graduates to treasure their experiences.

Business executive, motivational speaker and noted author Steve Pemberton reminded graduates of their power to change the world during the University of Mary Washington’s 2013 commencement address. “Every generation has a task. Yours is to remind America what has made her great,” Pemberton said, speaking of the values of innovation, courage and integrity. “You need to remind us of all those things and you are not too young nor inexperienced to do so. Educator Bill Bosher Addresses Master’s Candidates, May 10

Dr. William “Bill” Cleveland Bosher Jr., public policy expert and former Virginia superintendent of education, urged University of Mary Washington graduates to hold onto their passion and enthusiasm as they continue in their future paths. Bosher spoke at the University of Mary Washington’s graduate commencement ceremony on Friday, May 10. “I would say to those of you today with new skills and new knowledge: the day that you cease to be excited about young people, I don’t want you teaching mine,” Bosher said. “The day that you cease to be excited about your business or your company or what you sell or what you provide as a service, I don’t want to buy it. Because part of this is not just being prepared with new skills and knowledge, but part of it is the excitement that you have.” Bosher addressed more than 1,000, including graduates, family members, friends and faculty, gathered in the William M. Educator and Author to Deliver 2013 Commencement Addresses, May 10-11

The University of Mary Washington has announced its graduate and undergraduate speakers for the 2013 commencement ceremonies to be held on Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11. Dr. William “Bill” Cleveland Bosher Jr., public policy expert and former Virginia superintendent of education, will be the guest speaker for the graduate address on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the William M. Anderson Center. Steve Pemberton, business executive, motivational speaker and noted author, will deliver the undergraduate commencement address on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. on Ball Circle. Bill Bosher Bosher has been a teacher, principal, state director, local superintendent of two districts with more than 35,000 students and the superintendent of public instruction for the commonwealth of Virginia. A Look Back at UMW’s 101st Commencement

The University of Mary Washington graduated a total of 1,193 students during its 101st commencement in a graduate ceremony on Friday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the William M. Anderson Center and in an undergraduate ceremony on Saturday, May 12 at 9 a.m. in Ball Circle on the university’s Fredericksburg campus. The university awarded 73 master of business administration degrees, 102 master of education degrees, 21 master of science in management information systems, 30 master of science in elementary education degrees, 463 bachelor of arts degrees, 41 bachelor of liberal studies degrees, 80 bachelor of professional studies degrees and 379 bachelor of science degrees. The man who coined the term “Millennial Generation” spoke today across a generational divide. Historian and best-selling author Neil Howe, University of Mary Washington’s 2012 commencement speaker, talked about the vast differences between the robed graduates and their parents. “All of you Boomer and Generation X parents are essentially unlike your children – and were not the same even when you were kids,” said Howe in his address to more than 5,000 graduates, family members, friends and faculty, gathered on Ball Circle for the 101st annual commencement. “And you Millennial Generation graduates are essentially unlike your parents – and will not become like them as you grow older.” The distinctions between the graduates and their parents are striking. “Believe it or not, parents, your kids have never known that America, Chicago, and Kansas are the names of rock bands, not just places,” said Howe, a recognized authority on global aging. “Ever notice … [Read more...]

UMW Awards Top Honors at Commencement Ceremonies

The University of Mary Washington presented its top honors during commencement ceremonies Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12. Dorothy M. Sandridge of Charlottesville, Va., received the Colgate W. Darden Jr. Award, which is presented to the student with the highest grade-point average (GPA) in the four-year undergraduate program. She finished with a 3.984 GPA. Dawn S. Bowen, professor of geography, was presented the Grellet C. Simpson Award, the institution’s most prestigious annual award for excellence in undergraduate teaching. The recipient is routinely a senior member of the faculty. Edward Hegmann, newly-named Director and Professor of Athletics, Health and Physical Education Emeritus, was presented the Washington Medallion, one of the university’s most prestigious awards that recognizes an individual who has served Mary Washington with exceptional dedication. CEO Shawn Boyer Addresses Master’s Candidates, May 11

Shawn Boyer, founder and chief executive officer of SnagAJob.com, spoke at the University of Mary Washington’s graduate commencement ceremony on Friday, May 11, emphasizing the importance of living a purposeful and intentional life. “Most of us don’t think about our life plans as much as our business plans,” he said, noting the need to establish core values, set goals and choose positive peers. Boyer addressed more than 1,000, including graduates, family members, friends and faculty. The ceremony was the first commencement held at the recently opened William M. Anderson Center. A total of 230 graduate degrees were awarded, including 102 master of education degrees, 73 master of business administration degrees, 30 master of science in elementary education degrees and 21 master of science in management information systems degrees.
