Entrepreneurs to Deliver Commencement Addresses, May 9-10

Two enterprising entrepreneurs will speak at the 2014 commencement ceremonies for the University of Mary Washington on Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10. Kenneth Lopez, the founder and CEO of A2L Consulting, will give the graduate address on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the William M. Anderson Center. Rebecca R. Rubin, founder, president and CEO of the environmental consulting firm Marstel-Day, LLC, will speak at the undergraduate ceremony on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. on Ball Circle. Kenneth Lopez Lopez, a 1992 graduate of Mary Washington and a member of the UMW Board of Visitors, is the founder and CEO of the Alexandria-based A2L Consulting, a leading provider of jury consulting, litigation graphics and courtroom support to all of the nation’s largest law firms. Business executive, motivational speaker and noted author Steve Pemberton reminded graduates of their power to change the world during the University of Mary Washington’s 2013 commencement address. “Every generation has a task. Educator Bill Bosher Addresses Master’s Candidates, May 10

Dr. William “Bill” Cleveland Bosher Jr., public policy expert and former Virginia superintendent of education, urged University of Mary Washington graduates to hold onto their passion and enthusiasm as they continue in their future paths. Bosher spoke at the University of Mary Washington’s graduate commencement ceremony on Friday, May 10. “I would say to those of you today with new skills and new knowledge: the day that you cease to be excited about young people, I don’t want you teaching mine,” Bosher said. “The day that you cease to be excited about your business or your company or what you sell or what you provide as a service, I don’t want to buy it. Because part of this is not just being prepared with new skills and knowledge, but part of it is the excitement that you have.” Bosher addressed more than 1,000, including graduates, family members, friends and faculty, gathered in the William M. The University of Mary Washington graduated a total of 1,193 students during its 101st commencement in a graduate ceremony on Friday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the William M. Anderson Center and in an undergraduate ceremony on Saturday, May 12 at 9 a.m. in Ball Circle on the university’s Fredericksburg campus. The university awarded 73 master of business administration degrees, 102 master of education degrees, 21 master of science in management information systems, 30 master of science in elementary education degrees, 463 bachelor of arts degrees, 41 bachelor of liberal studies degrees, 80 bachelor of professional studies degrees and 379 bachelor of science degrees. The man who coined the term “Millennial Generation” spoke today across a generational divide. The University of Mary Washington presented its top honors during commencement ceremonies Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12. Dorothy M. Sandridge of Charlottesville, Va., received the Colgate W. Darden Jr. Award, which is presented to the student with the highest grade-point average (GPA) in the four-year undergraduate program. She finished with a 3.984 GPA. Dawn S. Bowen, professor of geography, was presented the Grellet C. Simpson Award, the institution’s most prestigious annual award for excellence in undergraduate teaching. The recipient is routinely a senior member of the faculty. Edward Hegmann, newly-named Director and Professor of Athletics, Health and Physical Education Emeritus, was presented the Washington Medallion, one of the university’s most prestigious awards that recognizes an individual who has served Mary Washington with exceptional dedication.
