Electroacoustic Barn Dance Returned to UMW


The Department of Music at the University of Mary Washington hosted the second annual Electroacoustic Barn Dance from Thursday, Nov. 8 through Saturday, Nov. 10. The three-day electronic music festival  included the works of more than 70 artists and composers from across the country presented in 13 concerts. Most of the performances were held in UMW’s Pollard Hall and Monroe Hall, with additional performances at The Blarney Stone and 909 Saloon in historic downtown Fredericksburg. The festival began with Concert I at 8 p.m. on Thursday, and continued throughout the weekend, concluding with Concert XIII at 10 p.m. on Saturday. UMW Philharmonic Hosts Fifth Annual Independence Day Concert

The University of Mary Washington Philharmonic Orchestra performed its fifth annual Independence Day Spectacular concert on Wednesday, July 4 at Stafford County’s Pratt Park. The concert, which was free and open to the public, began at 8 p.m. and continued through the fireworks display. The program featured patriotic favorites and Broadway hits, including a tribute to Henry Mancini and Richard Rodgers, the Battle Hymn of the Republic and a salute to the Armed Forces. Guest artist Sue Henderson sang several patriotic numbers with the orchestra, including “God Bless America” and “America the Beautiful.” Personalities from radio station B101.5 WBQB-FM emceed the show. The UMW Philharmonic, under the direction of Kevin Bartram, has brought orchestral music to the Fredericksburg area for more than 40 years. UMW Music Ensembles Perform this Summer

Three music ensembles from the University of Mary Washington will give free performances this summer as part of the Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center’s American Music Concert Series. All concerts are free and open to the public and begin at 7 p.m. at Fredericksburg’s Market Square. “UMW is proud to be a key sponsor of this series, which is designed to promote American music in a family friendly environment, and to highlight one of Fredericksburg’s most historic squares,” said Kevin Bartram, director of the UMW Philharmonic Orchestra. On Saturday, June 16, the UMW Faculty Brass Quintet performed the first UMW-sponsored concert of the series. The program included the music of John Philip Sousa, Leonard Bernstein and George M. Cohan, as well as a performance of “West Side Story.” Founded in 2009, the Faculty Brass Quintet features Bartram and UMW adjunct instructors Jim Ford and Gary Carper, along with musicians David Mersiovsky and Jeremy Cucco.
