At a meeting of the University of Mary Washington Board of Visitors today, President Richard V. Hurley announced his plan to retire, effective June 30, 2016. Hurley, who has served as UMW’s ninth president since July 1, 2010, has made clear his desire to spend more quality time with his family. Prior to being named president, he had already announced his retirement plans. UMW President Richard V. Hurley Receives National Recognition Award

The College Orchestra Directors Association has recognized University of Mary Washington President Richard V. Hurley for his support of the university’s collegiate orchestra program. UMW Philharmonic Director Kevin P. Bartram presented Hurley with the national award during the orchestra’s “March Musical Mix” concert on Saturday, March 17. The College Orchestra Directors Association (CODA) is the largest professional organization of collegiate orchestra conductors across the country. The award honors individuals within member colleges and universities who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to support the work of college and university orchestras. National CODA President Anthony Holland said that Hurley “surpasses expectations as a supporter of the Arts and of his community. UMW Launches Innovative Website and Reveals New University Tagline

The University of Mary Washington unveiled a new university website and brand personality at its first ever campus-wide pep rally on Friday, Oct. 7 in the Anderson Center. Led by newly inaugurated President Richard Hurley, the spirited gathering offered the first look at the innovative website and marketing initiatives. Also featured were the winning entries in a student video contest. “We’re not changing who we are. We’re just re-thinking how we present ourselves to the outside world,” Hurley told the crowd of more than 600 students, faculty and staff. “What does it mean to be University of Mary Washington?” he said. “It means small interactive classes taught by master teachers. It means a community that values and instills honor and integrity. It means intellectually curious students who seek rigorous academics.
