“Into the Woods” is a musical about a childless baker and his wife, who would do anything in order to have a child. After a run-in with a witch who claims she can help, they are sent on a journey through the woods to find four magical items: a slipper as pure as gold, a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, and hair as yellow as corn. While on this adventure they encounter many well-known fairy tale characters that have their own reasons for being in the woods. All of them are searching for something, but soon they come to realize that what they had all along might be better than what they find.

“Into the Woods” is a collaboration between James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim on the book and music, respectively. The two have worked together on multiple shows including “Sunday in the Park with George,” which won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1985. “Into the Woods” first premiered in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986. It later moved to Broadway in 1987 with Joanna Gleason as the Baker’s Wife and Bernadette Peters as the Witch. “Into the Woods” won Tony Awards for Best Score, Best Book and Best Actress for Joanna Gleason in 1988.

Seven University of Mary Washington professors have been named to the Princeton Review’s inaugural publication of “Best 300 Professors.” The list of best professors, announced Tuesday, April 3, features 300 teaching faculty members from 122 public and private colleges and universities.

Profiled in the publication are Beverly Almond, adjunct professor of English; Dan Hubbard, associate professor and chair of accounting and management information systems; Miriam Liss, associate professor of psychology; Jeffrey McClurken, associate professor and chair of history; Warren Rochelle, professor of English; Gregg Stull, professor and chair of theatre; and Steve Watkins, professor of English.

The Princeton Review partnered with MTV to choose “challenging and inspiring” educators from across the U.S. The publication is available in bookstores.

“We are thrilled to have seven professors recognized among the top in the nation,” said President Richard V. Hurley. “Our more than 350 talented and dedicated master teachers inspire our students daily, and their work in and out of the classroom underscores the university’s commitment to be the best public liberal arts and sciences university in the country.”

The profiles emphasize each professor’s dedication to student learning and his or her unique teaching style using examples from students and quotes from the professor.

“Many students say the school’s faculty ‘offer the highest quality learning experience possible for [their] tuition’,” according to UMW’s profile in the publication. “Maybe that’s because students believe that the faculty is ‘well educated’ and ‘have a superb grasp on the topics they are teaching.’ Remarks one student, ‘The professors are some of the brightest and best you could ask for…students have the opportunity for one on one time with professors for help in the classroom’.”

UMW’s professors are among 31 faculty from five Virginia colleges and universities, including the College of William & Mary, James Madison University, University of Richmond and Sweet Briar College. For the full list of professors, visit http://www.princetonreview.com/best-professors/.

Beverly Almond

In her 10 years at Mary Washington, Beverly Almond has taught countless students in art, Biblical, Appalachian and folklore literature. According to the Princeton Review: “Almond lets students take the lead. Instead of telling them the significance of a composition, Almond prefers they discover it for themselves.”

Dan Hubbard

Dan Hubbard, a registered certified public accountant, has taught accounting at Mary Washington for more than a decade.

The College Orchestra Directors Association has recognized University of Mary Washington President Richard V. Hurley for his support of the university’s collegiate orchestra program. UMW Philharmonic Director Kevin P. Bartram presented Hurley with the national award during the orchestra’s “March Musical Mix” concert on Saturday, March 17.

President Richard V. Hurley

The College Orchestra Directors Association (CODA) is the largest professional organization of collegiate orchestra conductors across the country. The award honors individuals within member colleges and universities who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to support the work of college and university orchestras.

National CODA President Anthony Holland said that Hurley “surpasses expectations as a supporter of the Arts and of his community. It is apparent that President Hurley has demonstrated extraordinary faith in the ability of the UMW Philharmonic to promote the institution as a community partner. He sets an example for all of us.”

The honor, given every two years at the association’s national conference, is the organization’s most significant award. Past recipients have included major financial donors, presidents of institutions, board chairs, department heads and fellow college, university and community musicians.

Bartram nominated Hurley for his extraordinary support of the orchestra program.

“Not only does he attend concerts, but he has continually recognized the program in public and in private to alumni and to perspective donors,” Bartram wrote in his letter to the nominating committee. “Community minded, he has also supported the Philharmonic’s annual July 4 concerts, and its upcoming PBS television special “A Down Home Christmas.”

Alex Jiménez, CODA’s national past-president described the award as a “collective ‘thank you’ from nearly 150 college and university orchestra conductors from throughout the United States to those who have done so much to support our programs.”

UMW’s ninth president, Hurley was inaugurated in September, 2011, after more than three decades in higher education. At UMW for 11 years, he has twice served as acting president, as well as vice president and UMW’s chief financial officer. Active in the Fredericksburg community, Hurley established the Town and Gown Committee, which has strengthened the university’s relationships with the Fredericksburg area community. He serves as a director of the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the board of the Rappahannock United Way, the Fredericksburg Regional Alliance and Virginia Partners Bank.
