UMW Philharmonic Opens Season with Masterworks Concert

The University of Mary Washington Philharmonic Orchestra kicked off its 42nd season with its Masterworks concert on Saturday, Oct. 20. The concert was centered on the theme "Star Gazing." The concert features Gustav Holst’s masterpiece “The Planets,” as well as “Earthrise and Return” by Chip Davis of Mannheim Steamroller fame, “A Short Ride in a Fast Machine” by Pulitzer-Prize winning composer John Adams and “Also Sprach Zarathustra” by Richard Strauss, better known as the theme to the Stanley Kubrick film “2001: A Space Odyssey.” The program concluded with John Williams’ “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.” Singers from UMW’s choir and the Chamber Chorale of Fredericksburg performed during the Adams piece. “We are thrilled to open our 42nd season with this ambitious program,” said Director of the Orchestra Kevin Bartram. “These are all great works, and the Philharmonic has been working hard to deliver an outstanding concert. UMW Philharmonic Hosts Fifth Annual Independence Day Concert

The University of Mary Washington Philharmonic Orchestra performed its fifth annual Independence Day Spectacular concert on Wednesday, July 4 at Stafford County’s Pratt Park. The concert, which was free and open to the public, began at 8 p.m. and continued through the fireworks display. The program featured patriotic favorites and Broadway hits, including a tribute to Henry Mancini and Richard Rodgers, the Battle Hymn of the Republic and a salute to the Armed Forces. Guest artist Sue Henderson sang several patriotic numbers with the orchestra, including “God Bless America” and “America the Beautiful.” Personalities from radio station B101.5 WBQB-FM emceed the show. The UMW Philharmonic, under the direction of Kevin Bartram, has brought orchestral music to the Fredericksburg area for more than 40 years. The award-winning group includes approximately 90 members from UMW and the community and holds several performances throughout the year.   … [Read more...]

Kenny Rogers Performs with UMW Philharmonic

Country music legend Kenny Rogers performed with the University of Mary Washington Philharmonic Orchestra on Saturday, April 21. The concert was part of the William M. Anderson, Jr. Celebrity Series. Over the course of his 52-year career, Rogers has sold more than 120 million records worldwide and recorded more than 65 albums, with 24 No. 1 hits. He has received hundreds of awards for his music and charity work, including three Grammys, 11 People’s Choice Awards, 18 American Music Awards, eight Academy of Country Music awards and five Country Music Association awards. The University of Mary Washington Philharmonic Orchestra performed classical works from Europe and America during its March Musical Mix concert on Saturday, March 17. The program included Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 and the evolving versions leading up to the U.S. national anthem “The Star Spangled Banner.” The concert began at 7:30 p.m. in George Washington Hall’s Dodd Auditorium. Through research on the origins of “The Star Spangled Banner,” UMW Philharmonic Director Kevin Bartram learned it stems from a British drinking song. Its path through American colonial times gave Bartram the idea to present this patriotic piece as never before featured—from its musical roots to a modern symphonic rendition. “We had to commission a special arrangement of ‘Anachreon’ to match the 18th century version, as the sheet music was not available.
