He competed successfully in solo competitions on the east coast in the late '60s and '70s and was a member of the Stuart Highlanders Pipe Band of Bedford, MA for several years before heading off to college. In graduate school in Cincinnati he joined and was soon Pipe Major of the Caledonian Pipes and Drums of Cincinnati. After moving to Virginia in 1984, he joined the Lionhart Pipe Band, and served as Pipe Major from 1988 to 1990. In 1991 he joined the Denny & Dunipace Pipe Band, which was renamed the City of Washington Pipe Band in 1993. He played with that group until 1996, traveling with them to two World Championship competitions. He has been the director of the Mary Washington College Eagle Pipe Band since its inception in 1997 and writes many of the band tunes. When not working with the band, Dr. Scott teaches chemistry at the University of Mary Washington.
While still a young piper, he received many hours of instruction from Vera Miller Patterson on how to play for highland dancers. Over the years he has regularly played at many of the dance competitions in the eastern United States.
