Support Services

The Department of Public Safety and Community Services provides support services and is comprised of University Police, Emergency Communication Office, Public Safety, Locksmith Services and Clerical Services.

Our University Police Department is a fully certified law enforcement agency by the Commonwealth of Virginia and our officers have full arrest authority. University Police enforce the laws and Codes of Virginia, City of Fredericksburg Ordinances and enforce Policies and Procedures of the University. University Police is manned 24 hours a day, year round.

The Emergency Communication Office is the central contact point for The Department of Public Safety and Community Services. The Emergency Communication Office is open 24 hours, year round and dispatches University Police, Fire and EMS in cooperation with the City of Fredericksburg’s 911 Call Center. Our emergency communicators are fully trained and certified as emergency communication officers through the Rappahannock Criminal Justice Academy. The emergency communications officers are able to provide immediate communication with the University’s Institutional Fire Marshal, Safety Office, Emergency Management Director, Facilities Services and other departments of the University.

Locksmith Services is responsible for the repair and maintenance of physical locking mechanisms on campus. They work closely with Residence Life, Facilities services and other staff to provide key control and access control of buildings. The Locksmith Office is open Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The entire Police Department and the staff of the Public Safety unit is committed to providing and maintaining safe and secure enviornments on all UMW campuses/properties for every member of the UMW community (students, staff and faculty) as well as to all guests and visitors.
