Support Services
The Department of Public Safety and Community Services provides support services and is comprised of University Police, Emergency Communication Office, Public Safety, Community Service Officer (CSO), Locksmith Services and Clerical Services.
University Police Department, a law enforcement agency certified by the Commonwealth of Virginia with full arrest powers. University Police enforce the laws and Codes of Virginia, City of Fredericksburg Ordinances and enforce Policies and Procedures of the University. University Police is manned 24 hours a day, year round.
Emergency Communication Office is the central contact point for The Department of Public Safety and Community Services. The Emergency Communication Office is open 24 hours, year round and dispatches University Police, Emergency services (Fire and EMS ambulance) through City of Fredericksburg Emergecy Call Center. Also, provides immediate communication with Public Safety, Facilities Services and other departments of the University.
Community Service Officer is responsible for parking enforcement, reserved parking details, medical escorts, disabled motorist assistance and non-law enforcement calls for service. The Community Service Officer (CSO) is also an additional set of "eyes and ears" for the University Police Department.
The staff of Public Safety is committed to providing and maintaining safe and secure enviornments on all UMW campuses/properties for every member of the UMW community (students, staff and faculty) as well as to all guests and visitors.
Locksmith Services is responsible for the repair and maintenance of physical locking mechanisms on campus. They work closely with Residence Life, Facilities services and Academic Building staff to provide key control and control of building maintenance issues. Locksmith Office is open Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Clerical Services provides informational support to the University. Police records archives are maintained by Clerical Services. Requests for background checks, documentary information, etc. should be directed to the Clerical Services staff.
