Jurisdiction and Authority
Under Virginia law, University Police have the mandate and authority to investigate all crimes occurring on the campus. The department’s jurisdiction applies to all University-owned, leased, rented, or controlled property, including:
- Public sidewalks and streets immediately adjacent the main campus
- Athletic fields
- Facilities Services at the Battleground complex, Brompton, Jepson Alumni Executive Center, James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library, and Belmont Estate/Gari Melchers Studio
- Stafford campus
We are responsible for maintaining order and security during all campus events, including athletic competitions, concerts, rallies, and visits from government officials and other campus guests. The University Police Department also employs unarmed security personnel as needed for special events and functions on campus.
With our goal of keeping the University community as safe and as harmonious as possible, there are times when crimes occur and arrests must be made. We maintain a close working relationship with the Virginia State Police, City of Fredericksburg Police Department, and the Sheriff’s Offices of Stafford and Spotsylvania counties.
