The Safety Escort Service provides transportation for any University of Mary Washington student or staff member from one point on campus to another during hours of darkness; generally from 9:00pm during daylight saving time and from 6:00pm during standard time.
Each member of Eagle Patrol (student members assisting in the Police Department) receives training on the operation of a state vehicle and more detailed training in the use of the handicapped-accessible escort van.
While on-duty, each Eagle Patrol member has direct radio contact with an (ECO) Emergency Communications Operator, ensuring the safety of the driver and passengers. Eagle Patrol operates safety escorts during the academic year each night from 6:00 pm (EST) or 9:00 pm (EDT) to 1:00 am. During all other times, safety escorts are performed by a UMW Police or Community Services Officer.
To request a safety escort, contact the University Police by using one of the emergency Blue Light phones on campus or call at 540-654-4444. Students are encouraged to pre-program this phone number into their cell phones.
IT IS PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE TO WAIT INSIDE YOUR VEHICLE OR BUILDING UNTIL THE RESPONDING STAFF ARRIVE BUT PLEASE DO NOT KEEP THE STAFF MEMBERS WAITING FOR YOU TO COME TO THE DOOR/GET OUT OF THE CAR WHILE YOU FINISH PHONE CALLS, READING, ETC.
If you are interested in applying for an Eagle Patrol position, please contact Assistant Vice President Susan Knick at sknick@umw.edu
Any questions, comments or concerns in reference to Police procedures, policies, regulations or other similar matters, email Executive Director of Police and Security Services, Mark Sandor, at msandor@umw.edu
