Drug and Alcohol Policy
The University of Mary Washington does not tolerate the use, possession (without valid medical prescription), or distribution of illegal or controlled substances. The University Police Department is proactive in its efforts to maintain a drug-free campus. Persons who are apprehended in violation of this regulation are subject to criminal penalties as well as academic sanctions by the administration. UMW is a drug-free workplace, and employees are subject to criminal prosecution as well as termination from the University if found in violation of this policy.
The UMW Police enforce the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia regulating the consumption, sale, and possession of alcoholic beverages. All persons above the age of 21 are permitted to consume alcoholic beverages in designated areas on campus. The Eagle's Nest Restaurant, located in Woodard Campus Center, has a license to sell beer for on-site consumption only.
The Police Department, as well as the Office of Residence Life, provides educational materials and programs. The Office of Judicial Affairs is responsible for determining University sanctions for violations of these policies. Residence Life staff informs students of resources available for treatment of an alcohol or drug-related problem.
