August 2009
Dear UMW Neighbor:
I write to provide you information about upcoming events on campus during the fall semester so that you may take advantage of the many opportunities to experience all that the University of Mary Washington offers the regional community. Of course, some of the special events bring increased traffic to our neighborhood, and I appreciate your patience when that occurs.
1. Fall Semester: Residence halls open for new students on Wednesday, August 19, and I hope you will join me in extending them a warm welcome. Their first social will be for ice cream that evening from 6:30-8 p.m. on the Brompton lawn on Hanover Street with music provided by a local band popular with the young generation. Returning students will move in on Sunday, August 23, and classes will begin on August 24.
2. Family Weekend: Students, their families, and the community will be offered a wide variety of activities to enjoy September 25-27. I hope you will take time to visit the museum and gallery exhibitions, participate in the 5K Run, or enjoy one of the many presentations offered by UMW faculty and students. You can learn more about these exciting and educational events by visiting www.umw.edu/familyweekend.
3. Homecoming: On Saturday evening, October 17, the Student Government Association will provide a student concert followed by a spectacular fireworks display on Hanover Field. The fireworks will be discharged from an area within the Physical Plant behind the Battlefield Athletic Complex.
4. Campus Construction Update: Lee Hall has re-opened in the center of campus with an expanded bookstore and an array of student services. Academic departments located in Monroe Hall have moved to temporary units on campus while that building – one of the original three that opened in 1911 – undergoes renovation for the next 18 months. In September, ground will be broken officially for the Anderson Center adjacent to Goolrick Hall at the north end of campus near Route 1. The convocation center will provide new basketball and volleyball courts, seating nearly 2000 spectators at UMW men’s and women’s varsity games and up to 2,800 for concerts. Construction at Eagle Village, the former Park and Shop Shopping Center on Route 1, is progressing on schedule. We expect to open student apartments and commercial spaces in Phase I next fall.
Should you have questions about these or any other University project or program, please feel free to contact my office.
Sincerely,
Judy G. Hample
President
