Provost
The Provost is the chief academic officer of the university and reports to the President. The Provost has oversight of university academic programs, curriculum, academic planning and budgets, teaching, research, and faculty matters. Working with the deans and the faculty, the Provost provides leadership of major university initiatives in teaching, research, and creative activities and has responsibility for all university educational and academic policies. The Provost coordinates university enrollment management and also has oversight of academic technologies, and library systems.

University of Mary Washington Engaging in Strategic Planning Process:
University of Mary Washington President Judy G. Hample initiated a comprehensive strategic planning process with a campus-wide address on November 17, 2008. In that speech, Dr. Hample outlined her vision for the University and asked members of the campus community to join her in “imagining the future.” She described UMW’s strategic planning as “a consensus-building process intended to be a combination of ‘ground-up’ ideas and reaction to the ideas I have presented.”
On December 17, Dr. Hample announced the formation of the strategic planning steering committee, made up of faculty, staff, a student, and an alumna.The 20-member committee, chaired by Nina Mikhalevsky, is scheduled to deliver the University strategic plan to the UMW Board of Visitors in November 2009.

Provost:
Dr. J. A. Harper joined the University of Mary Washington as Provost on July 1, 2009. Prior to coming to UMW, Dr. Harper served as dean and professor at Rowan University.
A New York native, Harper earned a B.S. degree, with Honors, in Psychology at City College, City University of New York and a Ph.D. degree in Psychobiology from State University of New York at Stony Brook. Harper was a Ford Foundation Fellow from 1975 through 1979 and a Fulbright Fellow to Japan in 1996. In 1986, Harper received the State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and in 1993, he was recognized by Black Opinion Magazine for the Black Achievers Award.
