Chapter 5 Hiring and Employment Policies and Procedures
Search and Selection
Ordinarily searches for adjunct faculty are carried out locally, and
occasionally regionally, beginning with a formal job announcement that
details the teaching assignment and selection criteria. Searches are
primarily conducted through advertisements placed in area newspapers,
although other methods are sometimes used, including: letters sent to
selective professionals and area graduate programs; personal contacts
with departmental faculty; and efforts exerted through the Faculty Diversity
Initiative.
General criteria used in adjunct faculty member selection include the
appropriate degree for the teaching assignment and the professional
credentials of the candidate, with emphasis on the extent and relevance
of teaching experience. In addition, individual departments may have
additional criteria depending, again, on the teaching assignment.
