Adjunct Faculty Handbook (Fredericksburg)

This section is being updated to reflect the August 2004 edition of the adjunct faculty handbook.

Introduction

The University of Mary Washington regards the providing of high-quality instruction to all of its students as its primary mission. Adjunct (part-time) faculty play an important role in helping the University fulfill its instructional mission. As members of the faculty, they hold the right of academic freedom and have the obligation to behave responsibly, both personally and professionally.

The Faculty Handbook lists the major policies and procedures of the University. While the Faculty Handbook includes material pertinent to all faculty, this Adjunct Faculty Handbook provides material that pertains particularly to adjunct faculty. It includes information about the mission and history of the University, academic responsibilities, working conditions and employment policies, campus academic resources and general services, and general information.

The department chair is the major point of contact between adjunct faculty and the University, and as such, is responsible for their orientation, supervision, and evaluation. Materials not included in this handbook that are available from the department chair include, but are not limited to:

• the Honor Constitution and the Honor System Guidebook
• selected sections from the Summer Memo, the document prepared by the Dean that provides a reference for many of the academic-year activities and programs for faculty
• sample syllabi and other relevant course documents
• grading-practice information for both the department and the University
• any specialized department materials (brochures, information about media holdings, etc.)
• the current pay scale for adjunct faculty
• a map of the University

This Handbook was originally prepared in August 1998
by J. Christopher “Topher” Bill, Professor of Psychology and long-time advocate
for the rights and needs of adjunct faculty.
