transfer STUDENT Academic Planning Guide
Fall 2008
This Guide is meant to help transfer students plan their first semester courses at the University of Mary Washington. A transfer student is defined as someone who has either completed an Associates Degree or been enrolled as a degree-seeking student at another 2 or 4-year institution. If you do not fit into this category (and you do not if the only transfer credit you are bringing in is AP, IB, or dual enrollment credit), you should refer to the Freshman Academic Planning Guide.
This Guide is not an exhaustive representation of the UMW requirements for graduation. Those regulations are discussed in depth in the current University of Mary Washington Academic Catalog. Upon entering the University, you will receive a 2008 Catalog containing all of the specific academic policies of the University. Your Academic Advisor will also help you understand the full degree requirements laid out in the Catalog, but it is your responsibility to know and understand them. The Transfer Student Academic Planning Guide is meant simply to help you think about the courses you will take for your first semester and prepare you for Preview.
Your goals after reading this publication are to prepare a Course Registration Request Form and then register online for your first semester at UMW using Banner, the University's web-based records system, on June 12 - 18.
Please realize that requirements and regulations differ from institution to institution. It is your responsibility to understand and adhere to the requirements and regulations for the University of Mary Washington.
Before you select your courses, use this guide to become familiar with the degree requirements at the University of Mary Washington. For information on how transfer credit will affect your requirements, please visit the BA/BS Transfer Credit Guide.
If you are transferring in with an Associate's degree from a Virginia Community College System (VCCS) school (please check to see that the degree you received - i.e. Liberal Studies - fits the criteria), all General Education Requirements are fulfilled except Foreign Language. If you are not transferring in credit for a 202 language course, then you must still satisfy the Foreign Language Requirement. You must still meet the Major, Across-the-Curriculum, and Elective Requirements and successfully complete the 122 credits needed for graduation. Those who have not completed an Associate's degree, but would like to see how transfer work from VCCS schools is awarded at UMW may refer to the Transferable Courses page in the online BA/BS Transfer Credit Guide.
If, after reading the Transfer Student Academic Planning Guide in its entirety, you still require assistance or academic advice, please take advantage of the various services that the Office of Academic Services offers new students as they plan for their first semester.
The information contained in the fall 2008 Transfer Student Academic Planning Guide was the best information available at the time of publication. Please verify any General Education or Across the Curriculum Requirements with each professor during the first week of classes.
