Step 2) Understand the term "liberal arts" and the umw degree requirements
MAJOR PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
A major is a concentration of course work in a particular academic discipline and is designed to provide a coherent program of study in that area. The major program consists of about one third of the total number of credits needed for graduation.
New students are not required to choose a major immediately. Students cannot officially declare a major until they have completed successfully at least 28 credits (including AP, IB, and transfer credits). Should you have an interest in one or more areas, you are encouraged to begin course work in those areas to prepare you for advanced work in those disciplines. Some programs recommend that one or more courses be completed early in your UMW career. If your interests lie in one of these areas, be certain to request registration in the appropriate courses.
The University of Mary Washington currently offers the following major options:
Majors for a Bachelor of Arts Degree |
Majors for a Bachelor of Science Degree |
|
You also have two other options. You may choose to complete two major programs (a double major) within the same degree or you may choose to design a special major program that meets your individual needs or interests. If you wish to pursue either of these options, you should discuss this with your advisor early in your first semester.
