French
Please refer to the current University Catalog to see the course descriptions and a major description with requirements for French.
Students may begin at any level language course for which they feel prepared (101, 102, 105, 201, 202 or 205), but must then complete the rest of the sequence in order without repeating or skipping any levels.
An online foreign language competency testing is being administered and all new students with a background in French are encouraged to take it. The test will be used for placement or may demonstrate competency. Any new UMW student who has high school coursework in the language may attempt the test. Details concerning the University’s foreign language competency exams are included in your new student academic mailing or you can follow the link above for more information.
Incoming students with high school preparation should use the following as a general guideline for choosing a language course:
with 2 years of language—enroll in FREN 102 or 105
with 3 years of language—enroll in FREN 201 or 205
with 4 years of language—enroll in FREN 202
With four years or more, a student is eligible to take a 300-level course, but must consult with the department to determine which course is most appropriate.
If you are entering UMW with transfer credit for introductory level courses in this major, please refer to the major requirements and course prerequisites in the University Catalog (see above) to see what courses you are required to take for the major and what prerequisites you have already met.
Please be sure to remember the General Education and Across-the Curriculum Requirements and how your individual transfer credit affects the remaining courses you must take at UMW for a BA/BS degree.
