Transfer Academic Planning Guide (BA/BS)

Mathematics

Please refer to the current University Catalog to see the course descriptions and a major description with requirements for mathematics.

New students considering a major in mathematics should select an appropriate beginning mathematics course, usually MATH 121, 122, or 223, along with MATH 125

Students should also note that the physics 105-106 sequence for the Natural Science General Education requirement can count in the mathematics major. This sequence begins in the fall semester and students who enter in the spring should consider taking PHYS 105 the first fall semester they are enrolled at UMW. Note: PHYS 105 has MATH 121 as a co-requisite.

Please note: Students who are certain that their intended major does not require a specific mathematics course should consider registering for MATH 110, MATH 115 or MATH 200, depending on their interest. It is also recommended that these students talk with their advisor about the best class for their intended major. Students interested in certifying to teach PreK-6 and do not plan to major in mathematics are advised to sign up for MATH 110.

For help choosing an introductory level mathematics course, please visit "Which Mathematics Course Should You Take?"

If you are entering UMW with transfer credit for introductory level courses in this major, please refer to the major requirements and course prerequisites in the University Catalog (see above) to see what courses you are required to take for the major and what prerequisites you have already met.

Please be sure to remember the General Education and Across-the Curriculum Requirements and how your individual transfer credit affects the remaining courses you must take at UMW for a BA/BS degree.
