Transfer Academic Planning Guide (BA/BS)

Step 6) Consider pre-professional interests

PRE-LAW

There is no required curriculum for students interested in preparing for law school and there is no required major, as law schools accept students from all fields. Consequently, new students should take courses which will develop the basic skills needed in law and choose a major on the basis of interest and ability. New students might select courses in the following areas: history, to provide background in the general culture; English, to improve communication skills; and philosophy, mathematics, or natural science, to develop analytical skills. At some point, interested students might want to consider courses in accounting, economics, foreign language, political science, and statistics. A faculty pre-law advisor is available to consult with interested students and has material available for students to use.

Students may also consider the Philosophy: Pre-Law Concentration major offered by the Classics, Philosophy, and Religion Department.
