Transfer Academic Planning Guide (BA/BS)

Transfer Student Academic Planning Guide
spring 2009

Step 10) Fill out the Course Registration Request Form

You should complete the Course Registration Request form and use it as a guide when you register online on December 15 & 16.

Students should consult the open course list to select courses for the fall semester. The complete schedule of courses for spring 2009 lists all courses offered. These may become available as other students add/drop classes or may be available through an instructor force add. The columns described in the list of courses are:

CRN = Course Registration Number
Course = Course discipline & number in UMW Catalog
Sec = Section of a course
Title = Title of the course in UMW Catalog
CO = Is there a co-requisite? (Y/N)
PRE = Is there a prerequisite? (Y/N)
ATC = Across-the-Curriculum designation

CR = Number of Credits
TIME = Time the class meets
Days = Days the class meets
Bldg/s = Building(s) the class meets in
Room/s = Room(s) the class meets in
Instructor/s = Instructor(s) of the course
Additional Requirements = Additional req. to register for course

Below are links to the Registration Form, as well as a Scheduling Worksheet that you may use in your course selection to avoid time conflicts. There are also links to examples showing you exactly how to fill out these forms. Please follow the instructions for completing the Course Registration Request Form below these links.

Your first semester schedule should consist of four or five classes for a total of 12-16 credits. Students may take no more than 18 credits. If you have an area of academic interest, you should request courses recommended for that particular area. You should then select other courses to begin fulfilling the General Education requirements.

Please remember that if you still have academic questions or require advice after reading the Transfer Student Academic Planning Guide, you may take advantage of the various services that the Office of Academic Services offers new students as they plan for their first semester.

Complete all of the information at the top of the form, and list your course selections. The completed form will be invaluable as you register online. Please note the following:

  1. Fill in the course information completely! Use the following key:
    • CRN No. = Course Registration Number; a 5-digit number to identify course when registering (e.g. 80021)
    • COURSE NUMBER = course number; according to the Catalog (e.g. SPAN 101 or FSEM 100E)
    • SECT. = course section; the same course can be taught at different times by different instructors, so there are multiple "sections" of a course to differentiate which is which. (e.g. 02)
    • No. of Credits = number of credits the course is worth; most courses carry 3 credits
    • GRADE TYPE = whether the course will receive a grade (A-F) or a pass/fail/satisfactory/unsatisfactory. Choose either:
      • GRADED* = course taken for graded credit (A-F), or
      • P/F or S/U = Pass/Fail or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory options. Physical Education courses and all 100-level DANC courses are always S/U.
        Only elective courses may be completed on a P/F basis. No course taken for General Education or Major Requirements may be taken on a P/F basis. You may take up to one P/F and two S/U courses in the same semester.
    • ABBREVIATED COURSE TITLE = the abbreviated course title (e.g. Writing Workshop or Bio Concepts I w/lab)
  2. Indicate the maximum number of credits you wish to take in the Total Credits box.
  3. List a variety of alternate courses.

*Please be careful to remember that all courses taken for General Education or Major requirements MUST be taken for graded credit.
