Music Performance Auditions

If you anticipate continuing your musical interests while in college, please complete the Music Performance Audition Request Form and return as instructed.  Otherwise please disregard.

There are two types of music performance at UMW:  Ensembles & Studio Lessons.  Entrance into either area is through an audition.  A brief description for each is presented below.

Ensembles

College credit is available for participation in the following music ensembles:  UMW CHORUS, a choral ensemble of women’s voices; SHOW CHOIR,  a song and dance troupe of mixed voices; FREDERICKSBURG SINGERS, an SATB chorus of college and community singers; JAZZ ENSEMBLE,  an all-student stage band; WIND ENSEMBLE, a band of wind and percussion; ORCHESTRA, a 90-piece ensemble of college and community musicians; FLUTE ENSEMBLE, CLARINET ENSEMBLE, BRASS ENSEMBLE, and STRING ENSEMBLE, specialized instrumental groups.  There is also a CHAMBER CHOIR and WOMEN'S CHAMBER CHOIR. All of the above ensembles rehearse once each week with additional rehearsals during weeks of performances.

Studio Lessons

Studio lessons are private instructional sessions for instruments and voice.  They are half an hour in length with anticipated practice in preparation for each session being five hours a week.

An audition for participation in both music ensembles and studio lessons is open to all students of the University, regardless of academic major.  Music majors, however, may receive special consideration in the areas of performance that relate to their major performance area.  Even so, nearly two-thirds of those who participate in music performance at UMW are not music majors.

All auditions will occur either the weekend before classes begin or in the first week of classes. You will receive a confirmation mailing, including your assigned time and place, before the beginning of the fall semester.
