College of Arts and Science Academic Catalog 2008-2009

UNDERGRADUATE COURSES OF STUDY

Mary Washington’s College of Arts and Sciences, through its twenty-two academic department, offers twenty-nine undergraduate majors. Some departments also offer special concentrations within the major, such as Latin within the Classics major, and special majors are possible through application to the Curriculum Committee. In addition, some programs (such as Computer Science and Education) offer accelerated degree programs leading to both an undergraduate degree and a master’s.

Courses numbered 100 through 199 are ordinarily elementary or introductory. Courses numbered 200 through 299 may assume prior study or competence in the subject, acquired in secondary school or in college. Courses numbered 300 through 498 assume either previous course work or special competence in the field. Courses numbered 499 are internships. Individual study courses offer learning opportunities in areas or subjects not covered by regular courses. Courses numbered 500 and above are for graduate students.

No course may be taken for credit that is a prerequisite for, or introductory to, a course already completed successfully. Course prerequisites are listed in the course descriptions published in this Catalog, and are also available in the online Schedule of Courses. Students are responsible for checking their courses against the list before registering.

The following pages of this section of the Catalog describe the courses and programs in liberal arts and sciences offered on the Fredericksburg campus. There is one other undergraduate program, the Bachelor of Professional Studies, which is offered only on the Stafford campus of the University of Mary Washington. Details about that program may be found in the separate academic catalog for the College of Graduate and Professional Studies.
