1.6 Administrative Structure
1.6.1 President The President is the Chief Executive Officer of the University of Mary Washington. Appointed by and responsible to the Board of Visitors of the University, the President performs those services and duties that are required of the President under the laws of Virginia, the Bylaws of the Board of Visitors, the University’s Policy and Procedures manual, or which may be assigned or delegated to him or her by the Board of Visitors. These vice presidents report directly to the President: Vice President for Strategy and Policy; Vice President for Administration, Finance, and Legislative Affairs; Vice President for University Advancement; Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty; Vice President for Student Affairs; and Vice President for Graduate and Professional Studies and Dean of the Faculty, and Special Assistant to the President for Strategic Initiatives and Partnerships. The President and the six vice presidents constitute the University’s Core Planning Group.
1.6.2 Provost Serves as the chief academic officer of the university and is responsible for oversight of all academic programs, academic planning and budgets, and faculty matters. The Vice President and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Vice President and Dean of the College of Graduate and Professional Studies, report directly to the Acting Provost.
1.6.3 Vice President for Strategy and Policy Serves as chief planning officer, and provides leadership roles in a variety of strategic areas such as enrollment management, University communications and publications, and assessment and institutional research.
1.6.4 Executive Vice President Serves as the University’s chief operations officer in all areas related to administration, business and finance, facilities, personnel, public safety and security, and legislative, community, and government relations.
1.6.5 Vice President for University Advancement Provides leadership in all areas related to University advancement and development, fund raising, alumni relationships and programming, and events management. The Vice President also has significant responsibilities within the UMW Foundation and the UMW Real Estate Foundation.
1.6.6 Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty Referred to herein as the Dean, this individual is the chief operations officer of the University in all areas of academic affairs and programming pertaining to the College of Arts and Sciences.
1.6.7 Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Provides leadership in all areas of student services and student life, such as student activities, residence life, the James Farmer Multicultural Center, judicial affairs, the Health Center, psychological services, athletics and recreation, and career services.
1.6.8 Vice President for Graduate and Professional Studies and Dean of the Faculty, and Special Assistant to the President for Government and External Relations Serves as the chief operations officer in all areas of academic affairs for the College of Graduate and Professional Studies and serves as the Dean of the Faculty of that college. The Vice President also has responsibilities in the area of identifying, developing, and bringing to fruition new academic-business opportunities for UMW as a whole.
1.6.9 Vice President for Enrollment and Communications Has responsibility for public relations and marketing, publications and design, and news and information in addition to student recruitment, admission, and enrollment for both campuses of the University.
1.6.10 Vice President for Information Technology and Institutional Research and Chief Information Officer Serves as the chief information officer of the University. Supervises and coordinates the management and security of all University information and technology resources. Provides leadership for information technology user services for faculty, students, and staff. Supervises the Office of Planning, Assessment, and Institutional Research (O/PAIR).
