III. Communication And Information

Communication among all parties is encouraged to facilitate the spirit and intent of the State Policy on Transfer.

A. The Office of Admissions at the University of Mary Washington will continue to serve as the primary provider of information to potential transfer students. General information about the transfer admission process is provided in regularly scheduled daily information sessions. In addition, any prospective transfer student may schedule an individual interview with a professional admissions staff member to receive more specific information.

B. The Office of Admissions at the University of Mary Washington will continue to provide at least one session each year at which key transfer decision makers at the College and counselors from the community colleges and Richard Bland College have an opportunity to meet and confer in person. Additionally, faculty from the University of Mary Washington have met periodically with faculty from the community college to discuss curriculum issues and will continue to do so as needed.

C. The Office of the Registrar will provide to the students an official evaluation of transferable credit once an offer of admission into the BA/BS degree program has been made.

D. The Office of the Registrar will update the UMW Transfer Guide for the Virginia Community Colleges and will make the information available on the UMW website.

IV. Administrative Responsibility For Transfer

A. The designated Chief Transfer Officer for the purposes of these Procedures of Implementation is the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs or designee. Specific information about transfer admission is available in the Office of Admissions.

B. The Department Chairpersons at the University of Mary Washington have the final authority concerning whether or not transfer courses meet specific requirements in their major programs for the BA and BS degree programs. The faculty mentor has this same authority for the BLS degree program.

C. A written policy on the appeal procedures for the transfer credit evaluation is available form the Office of Academic Services.

V. Support Services For Transfer Students

Prior to enrolling at University of Mary Washington, all new transfer students are invited to participate in the Orientation program. This program includes an overview of the academic programs, registration and an introduction to student support services. Students are assigned a faculty advisor in their intended major during their first semester.

All college services are equally available to transfer students and native students. To the maximum extent possible, transfer students accepted under this policy will have the same opportunities as native students for campus housing and financial aid.

At University of Mary Washington, every effort will be made to ensure transfer students achieve a full schedule of courses. Several academic departments reserve seats in their classes for entering transfer and freshman students. Transfer students have equal access to all academic majors as native students.
