UMW Today - Spring 2006

Alumni Board

FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

Alumni Board

TO: All Alumni

FROM: Monecia Helton Taylor ’81

As you read this, the spring semester will be well under way and full of activity for the Alumni Association and the University. Planning for the University’s Centennial in 2007-08 continues, and we await the arrival of a new university president.

In January, Washington, D.C.-area alumni met with current Mary Washington students to share information on careers, job searches, internships, and more at the annual Student-Alumni Career Networking Reception in Arlington. This spring, regional events for alumni will take place in Fredericksburg, Richmond, Alexandria, Baltimore, Norfolk, Irvington and Nashville. This page includes additional information on those events; be sure to also check our Web site at www.umw.edu/alumni.

The Alumni Association’s Board of Directors will also be busy this spring, with programs ranging from alumni awards to developing a slate of nominees for next year’s board. At its October meeting, the board welcomed guest speaker Stephen Farnsworth, associate professor of political science, who spoke on Virginia’s gubernatorial election. The December meeting was canceled due to weather conditions, and February’s meeting featured guest speakers William B. Crawley Jr. and Carter Hudgins, co-chairs of the University’s Centennial Celebration steering committee.

Thanks to all of you who responded to Harris Connect’s questionnaire in conjunction with the production of a new alumni directory. The directory should be on its way to you this spring. This project enables us to update contact and biographic information on our alumni. One exciting result is the fact that we can now reach more than 50 percent of our alumni by e-mail. Those of you who receive our quarterly e-newsletter and the occasional breaking news alerts from campus know that this is an excellent means of staying informed about and in touch with your alma mater.

I extend a heartfelt invitation to all of you celebrating class reunions to come back to Mary Washington for the weekend of June 2-4. You’ll be energized by the beauty and vitality of the campus, and by the connection to all the alumni who return. I look forward to welcoming you back home!
