From Ethel Nelson Wetmore: We extend our sympathy to the family of Vernie Blankinship Knight, who died at Goodwin House East in Alexandria last November. She was a staunch supporter of our class. We especially remember Vernie as the chair of our 50th reunion, with the slogan “50 for the 50th.” She gave such a wonderful toast at the award ceremony for Ruby Lee Norris in 1986. Nona Deckert Morse wrote that Vernie was always the stalwart member of the class. At her memorial service, Vernie’s minister said, “Thank you, Lord, for sharing Vernie with us.” Among Vernie’s survivors are her husband, daughter Edna Knight Roberts ’64, son John Knight, a son-in-law, daughter-in-law and four grandchildren.

We also extend our sympathy to the family of Lillie Turman. Her sister, Mary Alice Turman Carper, wrote that Lillie died last December. She had served as dean of freshmen at Mary Washington.

Marjorie Dement Britton ’37 and her husband are in a nursing home in Richmond. Nona Deckert Moose is in a retirement home in San Antonio; duplicate bridge is her big hobby. I sent her Mildred Ware Barta’s phone number and address. She thinks of her often and the members of Dr. Lautz’s home economics class.

Dorothy McGuire Bunch attended a special reception honoring her daughter, Susan Brittingham ’57, who had her quilts on display at Virginia Tech’s Perspective Gallery.

Frances Liebenow Armstrong keeps busy working three hours a day at Mary Washington.

Ruby Lee Norris sent me lots of news. Audrey Davis Smith chairs a committee that has been compiling a history of Lancaster County, where Ruby Lee has some ancestors. Ruby Lee reports that the book, full of old pictures and sketches, is beautiful. Lillian “Mike” Boswell Rothery ’38 lives in White Stone, Va. She and Ruby Lee have had cataracts removed by the same doctor; now they both have nearly 20-20 vision!

Also in the same vicinity are Connie Hook Felvey ’56, who lives in Northumberland on Bayberry Island; Jean Polk Hanky ’69, who lives in White Stone; and Sylvia McJilton Woodcock ’61, who lives in nearby Mathews County. Sylvia invited several Mary Washington folks for brunch last December, and they celebrated Ruby Lee’s birthday.

My San Francisco family – granddaughters Dot, 5, and Julianne, 11, and grandson T.J., 15 – visited last winter.
