Gertrude “Trudy” Hawk Powers, who lives in Worcester, Mass., has
downsized to a condo and loves it. She has four children and five grandchildren
and has been doing a lot of traveling since her retirement from Clark University.
Her most recent big trip was to Italy.
Ellen Hertz Hewitt and Charlie took a trip to England in April with three
of their children and their spouses. Ernestine “Erna” MacLaughlin
Lawrence retired in June 2002 after 22 years at Deutsche Bank Asset Management.
She finished her career as a vice president, with offices in both Boston and
New York. She and husband Kent are now enjoying “life in the slow lane.”
They live in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, in the summer and then head south to
their condo on Boston’s waterfront for the winter months. They keep
busy with several clubs and organizations, and tutor in the Boston Public
Schools. They have two children and two grandchildren.
Nancy Hallett Guest and Harry are pleased to announce the arrival of their
twin granddaughters, Ava and Kate, who were born last year to oldest son Jim
and his wife, Susan.
Carolyn Six Herel is an editor for an online directory, Open Directory Project,
in which she compiles descriptions of various recreation and outdoor organizations.
Meredith Ann Puller Townes and husband Jack took a five-week trip with Meredith’s
sister, Mary Lou Puller Griggs ’54, and her husband, Earl, last January.
They visited Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia. Meredith and Connie Hook Felvey
’56 see each other frequently.
Anne Jones Belsha and husband Les spent several weeks in Kansas City with
their daughter and her family. She happily reports they survived last year’s
Christmas holidays with a brand new granddaughter, 5- and 2-year old grandsons,
a new house and lots of cold weather. Anne is involved with a new chapter
of LifeLong Learning Institute. Her next adventure was to an Elderhostel on
the Finger Lakes in New York. In July, they enjoyed their annual family vacation
at Emerald Isle, N.C.
Betty Huckstep Cross keeps busy with gardening, church work, children and
eight grandchildren. She lost her husband Chuck to leukemia last year.
Evelyn Nitti Ewald’s son-in-law is the new head football coach at the
University of Richmond. She thinks it’s great to have a Virginia connection
again, and they are looking forward to visiting daughter Catherine and the
grandkids who are moving from New York. In January, Evelyn had a mini-reunion
with Helen Moore McMillan and Sheila Foley Reeder at Sheila’s home.
While attending Mary Washington, they all lived in Arlington, Va. Now, they
all live in Florida: Sheila in Jacksonville Beach, Helen in Destin, and Evelyn
in Orlando. Evelyn also keeps in touch with Margaret “Moggy” Savage,
who has a vacation home in Florida.
Bruce Ritchie Spain was in Florida last winter and spent time with Sally Strawhand
Straton Westphalen, who has a home in Vero Beach, and Janie Watson Rawlings.
Janie and Lew live in Hobe Sound in the winter and in Devon, Pa., the rest
of the year. Bruce spends her time in Florida on Hutchinson Island. She talks
frequently with former roommate Helene Joan O’Shaughnessy Kaufmann,
who lives in California.
Barbara Morton Williamson continues to teach English as a second language
to international students. Daughter Amy is married and teaches second grade
north of Chicago.
Mary-Montague Hudson Sikes, author and artist, was a speaker at the 10th annual
Virginia Festival of the Book in Charlottesville, Va., last spring. She was
also featured on a recreational travel panel. Her latest publication is Hotels
to Remember.
Marilyn “Mickey” Norquest Hutchinson and family live in Atlanta.
She has four children and 10 grandchildren. She worked as a medical technologist
and a research assistant to put her husband through medical school. Now, she
has taken up woodcarving. She teaches carving to senior citizens at the local
Life Enrichment Center, and also makes sculptural figures in cloth and clay.
Saundra Elroy Dale recently returned to Englewood, Fla., from Darien, Conn.,
where she lived for 35 years. She taught elementary school after graduating
from Mary Washington. After raising her four children, she was in real estate
sales and management for 28 years before retiring.
Marianne McDermott is enjoying her retirement and working about 12 hours a
week as a consultant. She was planning a trip to Scotland and is taking an
acting class.

Williamson spent a week exploring the Outer Banks of N.C.
