Kitty Shannon and her sister were planning to move in together in Richmond
as soon as they found the perfect house. Kitty’s beautiful home in an
older section of the city wasn’t big enough for two.
Gloria Moskowitz Fischel-Gilbert and husband Myron went to Florida for baseball
spring training; Myron is an avid fan. Unfortunately, when they returned home,
there had been a water pipe leak and their home was a mess. Gloria continues
to work as a travel agent out of her home. She had three more grandchildren
due before fall.
Wendy Shadwell took a three-week cruise to Antarctica, South Georgia and the
Falklands. Wendy also traveled to Chicago for the annual meeting of the American
Historical Print Collectors Society, on whose board she sits. She also has
been asked to serve on the Staten Island Historical Society.
Elizabeth “Betty” Caudle Marshall and husband Tom live in Sanford,
N.C., where Tom is the minister at a small Presbyterian Church. Tom taught
at Barton College for 32 years before studying for the ministry. Betty has
been a math teacher for many years and is now retiring. She and Tom have four
children and eight grandchildren. Betty keeps up with her former roommate,
Betty Jo Cowles Yates, who lives in Mechanicsville, Va. In fact, Betty used
a book in her advanced placement statistics class that Betty Jo’s husband,
Dan, wrote.
Nancy Slonim Aronie’s book, Writing from the Heart, is in its seventh
printing. She continues to give writing workshops on Martha’s Vineyard,
where she and her family live. Her husband invented a toy called the Zero
Blaster and has sold 200,000 of them. Wow! Son Josh opened the Park Center
Café on the island and is doing well. Unfortunately, son Dan has progressive
MS and diabetes, is wheelchair bound, and had open heart surgery last winter.
As Nancy says, “Life is beautiful and tough.”
Kathy Friedman Levinson and husband Sandy say they will spend no more winters
in Connecticut. But the rest of the year, they love living on the water in
their small beach community one hour from New York. Sandy, a retired vascular
surgeon, is enjoying his freedom. Kathy is a marriage and family therapist.
Son David works in the ski industry in Breckinridge, Colo., and daughter Karin
works in the film industry in Los Angeles.
Jim and I recently visited with Lois Smith McDaniel and husband Howie. They
moved into a new house in a retirement community last summer and love their
new place, except for the commute to Northern Virginia to work. Lois is a
teacher and traveler; every summer she’s off to see the world.
