From outgoing Class Agents Margaret “Peg” Hubbard and Patricia
Goodall Strawderman:
Though the weather did not cooperate as well as we would have
liked, our 30th reunion turned out to be great. A highlight was the dedication
of the stunning new Alumni Executive Center. Words cannot describe how thoughtfully
this addition was planned and how well it complements the existing surroundings.
Trench Hill never looked better! Among Reunion Weekend’s Saturday night
banquet attendees were Rita Hodges Gilpin, Debra Ryan Howard, Susan Meisinger,
Pamela White, Susan Passarello Quenzer and Sidnia “Sid” Baker
Etherington. At brunch the next morning were Betsy Hazen Williamson, Katharine
Tucker Ledford and Alice Harding Thomas, among others. Some committed groups
of Mary Washington friends, including Pat Denton Rounds, Diane “Harvey”
Smith and Pam “Wart” Smith McGahagin, use Reunion Weekend as a
“no excuses, girls only” weekend. What a great idea! Keep that
in mind five years from now for our 35th.
Pat Denton Rounds e-mailed that she made it back to North Carolina safely
after Reunion Weekend by blaring a Bruce Springsteen CD! She planned a trip
to England in early September to visit daughter Kate. She also was house-hunting.
She wondered if Lisa Tyree Nose had responded to a very loud and incoherent
group phone message during Reunion Weekend. Lisa reports that she was thrilled
to receive it, and sorry she was unable to attend the gathering. Harvey Smith
reported that sons Adam and Ben graduated with honors from Virginia Tech.
Harvey lives in Great Falls, Va., and works for LexisNexis, an online database
provider.
Unfortunately, my Jefferson 4th West roommate, Susan McDonald Osborn ’75,
could not attend Reunion Weekend. She and husband Paul live in Herndon, Va.,
and are now “empty nesters.” Susan is a program manager for Pearson
Education. Daughter Kate, 23, was married in March. Lauren, 20, is at Virginia
Tech.
Mary Yip Wong ’73 e-mailed after reading the last Class Notes. She read
a small news item about Tricia Draper Charles Hollenbach, who attended from
1970 to 1972. Mary had lost contact with Tricia and wanted to reconnect with
her. (Now, see, that’s the idea – read Class Notes, send in your
news and rekindle old friendships!)
Barbara Wilson Conley’s son, Brian, is an ad executive who married in
April. Brian’s twin, Scott, is a DJ and actor in Los Angeles, and their
youngest son is at Virginia Tech. Barbara and Lloyd live in Woodlake, Va.;
she teaches fourth grade and Lloyd works for SunTrust. She gets together with
Trisha Powell Westcott, from Fredericksburg; Julie Blair Geier, in White Stone,
Va.; and Carolyn Akers, in California. She also recently tracked down Sally
Metz Johnson, who lives in Georgia.
Margaret Mary McVeigh Canale’s life centers on her two boys: Alex is
a junior at St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, N.J., and Brendan is in
seventh grade. Both are Boy Scouts and very busy with tennis, soccer, the
school newspaper, school clubs and friends. Margaret Mary teaches a class
for new lawyers and is president of our Inns of Court. Her sister-in-law,
Liz Canale, is a 1984 graduate of Mary Washington. Margaret Mary hears from
Sid Baker Etherington and had communicated with Janice Anderson Weitzen ’75
for awhile.
We have enjoyed serving as Class Agents, but it is time for a new perspective.
Please welcome our successors by sending them lots of news about yourself
and any classmates.
