From outgoing Class Agent Courtney Quillen:

Leslie Ptashinski was planning an October wedding. She lives in New Jersey and works at Phillips-Van Heusen. She still plays field hockey, is an avid cyclist, lifts weights and runs. She also helped organize an annual bike ride to raise money for the American Diabetes Association, a cause dear to her because she lost her father to this disease.

Jeannette Hallock-Solomon lives in Fort Collins, Colo., with husband Michael and their two sons. Dawn Baugher Agostini is an optometrist in Maryland and has two children: Benjamin, 3; and Samantha, 1. Nick Miller lives in San Antonio with his wife and two sons. He filled us in on some news of his acquaintances. Wade Scott “Spidey” Pate ’95 and his wife, Sharon, had their first child in January. Mel Self Whisnant and husband Todd were expecting their first child this fall.

Annie Lellinger Schaller and husband Bo were expecting their first child in October. Sandy Fowlkes and Todd Lennox expected a little sister for daughter Kaitlin, 2. They moved to San Antonio, where Todd is now chief of contracting for the Southwest region of the Army. Sandy has put her teaching career on hold.

Jackie McCauley and husband Hunter Clark ’93 were expecting a baby girl in August. She joins big brother Ethan, 2. They live in the Richmond area, where Jackie is a full-time mom. Ashley Herron Scott and husband Kevin welcomed their first child, Cameron Hunter Scott, in March 2003. Ashley works part time in a music therapy private practice. Mary E. Andrews and Troy Sacquety ’95 had their first baby, Jackson, last December.

Sarah Anne Brewer Sumpolec was offered a five-book contract for her young adult fiction series. Two are out, and the third will be released next spring. She has also been asked to co-author a screenplay. Sarah and husband Jeff have three daughters.

Vanessa Steele Szemenyei is married and has two daughters. She lives in Bethlehem, Pa., and works part time as an insurance agent. Sara “Kim” Anderson Rainey lives in San Diego with her husband and daughter. She is a speech pathologist. After a year of teaching at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Karen Hatwell moved back to Maryland. She teaches at Villa Julie College, a small liberal arts school in Baltimore. Since graduation, Chris Carroll Engle has moved cross-country twice; she now is back in Virginia. She is the pricing manager for an international steamship line. In her free time, she coaches gymnastics.

Joe Moorman earned a master’s degree in business and lives in Williamsburg with his wife. He is chief financial officer of JK Management Group and is working toward a Ph.D. in finance.

Jen McKay McGuckin is married and lives in Alexandria, Va. She recently met up with Mary Trocchia Rasa and Carrie Price Harper for a girls’ night out.
Brooke Vallaster moved about five years ago to a small coastal town in Georgia. She works on Sapelo Island as the education coordinator for the National Estuarine Research Reserve. Nick Duncan worked as a fisheries technician in Oregon, but changed gears and is now cooking for a medium-size casino. He planned to attend a culinary arts school in the fall.

Eric “Snuffy”Axelson has been on tour with his new band, Maritime. He lives in Washington, D.C. His former band, The Dismemberment Plan, broke up last fall after four records and tours of the U.S., Japan and Europe.

By the time you read this, I will be Courtney Quillen Roberts. My wedding to Jim Roberts took place in July. We live in La Plata, Md., where I work as an elementary school counselor. Classmates who participated in my wedding or the preparations – or simply provided moral support – included Stacy Lucas, Joyce Solomon Toal, Sarah Kanney Brabo, Deb Hodges Shelton and Kelley Huston Ralston. Keep your news coming to the new class agents!
