UMW PHILANTHROPY CLASS ANNOUNCES GRANT RECIPIENTS

Doris BuffettStudents enrolled in a philanthropy course at the University of Mary Washington announced two local nonprofit organizations that received grants from the course-created University of Mary Washington Philanthropic Education Organization (UMWPEO). Homes for America: Heritage Park Academic Achievement Program was awarded $7,000 and Rebuilding Together was awarded $3,000.

“This class and the philanthropic activity are emblematic of UMW’s traditional strength in closely mentored education and its future as a leader in the new liberal arts,” said William J. Frawley, president of UMW.  “They also show one of UMW’s distinctive features – the pervasive ethos of goodwill.”

The grants were funded by Doris Buffett’s Sunshine Lady Foundation, which provided the class with $10,000 to award how it saw fit. The students received a total of 30 applications, a 50 percent increase over last year.

At the presentation ceremony, Doris Buffett (pictured above) congratulated the class on their hard work.  “I am very delighted with this class,” she said.
