Eagle Band’s Win Was in the Bag
Mary Washington’s Eagle Pipe Band marched to victory at last October’s 13th annual Richmond Highland Games and Celtic Festival. There, the ensemble placed first in the Grade V pipe band competition, beating four bands from Virginia and Maryland.
If the Mary Washington blue in their kilts doesn’t reflect enough school spirit, the band’s mission does.
“We seek to have our actions reflect well on UMW,” the group said in a statement. “Whenever the University requires the band’s services, we meet that obligation.”
Founded in 1997, the group includes pipers, drummers, and Highland dancers from Mary Washington and the community. The band plays regularly at University and area events, showing off its lung power and a repertoire that includes both traditional and original music and dance.
Pipe major and band director Raymond Scott, professor of chemistry, has led the group since its inception. During a piping career that began in 1965, Scott has played in a variety of bands and participated in at least two world championship piping competitions.
The Eagle Pipe Band also funds scholarships for qualified pipers, drummers, and dancers who attend UMW. Learn more about the ensemble by visiting www.eaglepipeband.org.
