Letter from the Editor

Like an old photograph, a college campus has the power to capture our youth, keeping it safe from the touch of time. Years may have come and gone since donning cap and gown, but a single step onto the grounds of your alma mater can erase them all. The hopes and dreams, energy and ambition, optimism and inspiration – they all come rushing back.

I found myself, a 1992 Mary Washington grad, lost in that sentimental sensation as I stood on campus late last year, crisp autumn leaves fluttering at my feet. A flurry of students rushed by – on the way to workouts at Goolrick, lunch dates at Seacobeck, study sessions at Simpson … who knows where. I felt as though I, too, should be in a hurry to do something important or enlightening. I wished to be included in the laughter, awash in the adventure – and knowledge – the day was sure to bring.

As the new editor of University of Mary Washington TODAY, my nostalgia – my pride – was at an all-time high. After working for a daily newspaper most of my professional life, I was thrilled to have landed a job at my alma mater.

But no matter what led you here, when you came, or how long you stayed, if you’re reading these words, you, too, have been touched by the Mary Washington magic.

Whether you walked these hallowed grounds to learn, to teach, to work, or simply to visit, you’ve surely been captivated by the beautiful campus, with its sparkling fountains, majestic trees, and distinguished architecture. But there’s much more to the UMW experience than meets the eye.

Academic excellence, an intimate learning environment, and extraordinary students and graduates make this school stand out. I look forward to showcasing these qualities in the coming issues of TODAY, beginning with this, the centennial edition dedicated to celebrating Mary Washington’s first 100 years.

As UMW begins a new era, scores of alumni will be watching. As their alma mater strives to become even better, so will their magazine. And while this publication is bound to continue to change and grow, much like the University itself, it will cling to the characteristics that make it shine.

Flip through these pages to catch up with college friends or favorite professors, to learn more about a building you once called home, or to meet someone dynamic who studies here right now.

I hope the content of this magazine will have the power to revive your passion for education, to remind you that anything is possible, and to make you feel as though you’ve just stepped back onto your beloved college campus.
