SOAR  CHALLENGE  CUP - Honoring Outstanding Sportsmanship & Participation in Intramural Sports

The SOAR CHALLENGE CUP was established in 2007 by the Department of Campus Recreation to encourage and reward outstanding participation and sportsmanship within intramural sports programming on the campus of the University of Mary Washington.   The award will be presented annually to one UMW residence hall and one UMW group who demonstrate the highest levels of sportsmanship and respect while participating in a variety of IM Sports events.

The cup standings are based upon points accumulated throughout the academic year.  The criteria for points are as follows:

  • Team Event Participation
  • Individual Event Participation
  • Final Sportsmanship Rating - Team Events only
  • Female Participation
  • Faculty/Staff Participation
  • Team Event Final Standing
  • Individual Event Final Standing

To qualify for entry in the Soar Challenge Cup standings, each residence hall or independent group that competes in a team event must ensure that they list their affiliation on each event entry form.  In addition, participants who compete in individual events must too identify their association with their group to ensure that they receive points.  Please take a look at the sample event registration scenarios listed below:

Residence Hall
  • Jefferson hall competes in basketball under the team name “Jeff’s Jammers.”  The team captain lists “Jeff’s Jammers” as their team name and checks the residence hall affiliation box on the entry form.  They list Jefferson Hall as their affiliation in the space provided.
  • Jefferson hall decides to compete next in team dodge ball.  They could choose to use the same team name from basketball, but decide to call themselves “The Dodge Dynamos.”  The team captain will list the new team name on the entry form, and again check the residence hall affiliation box and write Jefferson Hall in the space provided.
Independent Group
  • A group of friends gets together and enters a team in men’s indoor soccer under the name “Beckham’s Boys.”  To receive credit in the cup standings, they check the independent box on the entry form and list “Beckham’s Boys” as their affiliation.  They will use the same team name to compete in any other team or individual events to get credit in the cup standings.
Varsity or UMW Club
  • The women’s varsity volleyball team decides to enter a women’s team in the softball tournament.  They select the varsity/club box and write in women’s volleyball as their affiliation.  They enter “Eagle Spikers” as their team name. The program can choose then to use the same team name when they entry other events or choose a new name and ensure that they again write in women’s volleyball as their affiliation.
