Cheerleading - contact Whitney Packett
Cheerleading at UMW is a co-ed club that cheers for the Men’s and Women’s varsity basketball teams. Practices are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday for an hour and a half in the afternoon. We are a student-run organization, but we have two wonderful volunteer coaches. Our season lasts from September-March, with the majority of games in the spring semester. Our main goal is to support the Mary Washington teams while improving our dances, cheers, stunts and tumbling. Prior experience is preferred, but since we are a club we do not make cuts, so all interested individuals are welcome! For more information, contact us!
Color Guard - contact Amy Edwards
Color guard, sometimes known as “the sport of the arts” is a combination of skills including spinning flags, rifles, and sabers, dancing, and acting. These concepts are combined into a routine to a musical selection. This type of color guard, also known as winter or indoor guard is performed inside a gymnasium during the months of January to April with the absence of the marching band used during the fall semester. Our color guard performs for a competition circuit known as the Atlantic Indoor Association, a branch of Winter Guard International. Enigma has been a part of the UMW clubs since the 2002-2003 school years and is completely student run. No experience is necessary to join, just a positive attitude and the ability to work hard!
Cycling - contact Steven Bruen
The UMW Cycling Club promotes the sport of cycling through team rides, collegiate racing, and other events. The club is co-ed and is composed of road and mountain cyclists. The club competes in the Atlantic Coast Cycling Conference for both mountain biking and road cycling. No prior experience is necessary – however – a bicycle is necessary. Individuals are encouraged to join even if they have no intention of racing. The cycling club has produced both conference champions and professional cyclists since its inception.
Fencing - contact Katie Vrobel
The Fencing Club holds practices Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays from 5:00-6:30 in the Goolrick Hall Auxiliary Gym. No prior fencing experience is necessary; the majority of our new members have never fenced prior to college. In addition to regular practices, the Fencing Club also travels to, and hosts, tournaments. For more information, please visit our website

Men's Rugby - contact Kyle Hoffman
Practices are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 6 pm. Games are held on Saturdays. There are no cuts and no bench sitting, plus everyone gets to play every weekend. Almost every US rugby player first plays the game in college, so there's no experience required. Rugby is a great way to get in shape or to stay that way. Although the team is very competitive, the atmosphere at practices and during games is very sociable. UMW Men's Rugby plays several NCAA Division 1 schools, and the Virginia Rugby Union - UMW's regional league - frequently sends at least one team to the National Final Four. Anyone can join at any time of the season, so come out today!
Men's Ultimate - contact Trevor Langston
Men's Ultimate Frisbee is a great sport for serious athletes who do not want to play on an intramural or collegiate level sports team. We are a competitive team who plays against Division I – Division III schools. The amount of time required to be a member of this team is three days of three hour practices per week and about eight tournaments a year. Our tournaments include three-day trips to North Carolina and day trips to Richmond. Although attendance is not mandatory at all tournaments, it is encouraged to give players the feel of the sport and of team play. The culmination of our year is the sectional tournament in Richmond. If we are one of the top qualifying teams, we will move on to the Regional and then National tournaments. Team dues consist of $20 dollars per semester and a registration fee for a UPA (Ultimate Players Association) membership. It is also mandatory to have cleats (no metal spikes) and an ultimate disk.
Men's Soccer - contact Reed Espinosa
UMW Men's Club Soccer provides an opportunity for those who wish to play competitive soccer without having to join a varsity team. Practices are held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays year round as long as the weather cooperates. We play games outdoors in the fall and spring against regional schools (the College of William & Mary, Hampden-Sydney, Longwood University, the University of Richmond and more) and indoors in January and February against local Fredericksburg teams. Anyone can join regardless of skill level, though we do ask that those who join be committed to the club.
Tennis - contact Terry Grant
The UMW Club Tennis team is a co-ed sports club that is proud to bring students at the University an opportunity to play tennis at both competitive and noncompetitive levels. Founded in 2006, the club has rapidly expanded with over 50 members and has worked its way up in the national club rankings to be one of the top five division III schools in club tennis, and one of the top 60 tennis clubs in the nation. We have three practices a week in the fall and spring, and one a week in the winter. There are no mandatory practices, matches, or competitions, and the team does not make cuts unless you do not play club dues. Players can challenge up ladders to earn the right to play in matches and USTA events. We play both conventional tennis and USTA world team tennis club competitions, including Mid-Atlantic Sectionals each spring. Anyone of any skill level is welcome to come to practice and try it out, just email one of our captains and be sure to check out our website at
www.mdubtennis.org.
