Counseling

Counselors meet individually with clients in confidential sessions to determine their particular small business needs and to develop plans of action. Counselors provide information on a variety of business subjects, so that clients can make informed decisions regarding their businesses. Some of the most common areas for discussion include:

  • Business and strategic planning
  • Business structure considerations (sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, limited liability company, etc.)
  • Marketing
  • Personnel concerns (hiring employees, policies and procedures, etc.)
  • Purchase or sale of a small business.

Training

Our seminars, training programs, and workshops are developed to prepare new and existing small business owners to start or expand a business. For a complete list of training classes, click on the "Seminars and Training" link or look under "Announcements" on the right-hand side of our "Home" page.

Information Resources

Our resource center contains reference books, brochures, articles, and videotapes covering various subjects of interest to small business owners. We also have access to national databases and web resources, and a partnership with our host, the University of Mary Washington. Clients may schedule computer time by appointment.

We can also assist small businesses in seeking the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of other outside resources, such as government agencies, manufacturers, publishers, and trade associations. Clients may contact these organizations directly for information specific to their small businesses.
