Summer might be a quiet time in a lot of departments on campus, but it’s high season for study abroad!
This summer, the Center for International Education (CIE) collaborated with #UMWSocial to follow three of our UMW Faculty-Led Study Abroad Programs in Spain, France and Wales. CIE asked faculty directors to recruit a student volunteer from their program to be a social media blogger – recording what their program was doing with a daily photo and a bit of text on either Twitter or Instagram.
The students were enthusiastic about the idea and enjoyed chronicling their international experiences. At the end of each dedicated blogger’s time abroad, #UMWSocial put together a Storify to capture the students’ travels into a digital story.

CIE has found that social media is a powerful tool for keeping students engaged and promoting our education abroad opportunities. The digital stories give us photo journals to recruit students for future years.
We can’t wait to develop our student blogger program into something even more robust in the new academic year.
