Phish ploy via fake credit union e-mail
March 11, 2008 -- Another phishing attempt is showing up in the e-mail inboxes of faculty, staff and students. The message promises you $80 if you to fill in a questionnaire that is really aimed at getting you to reveal personal financial information. Although the link to the real financial institution is listed near the top of the e-mail, the link to complete the questionnaire goes to an off-shore web server. Please be wary of such e-mails--the best choice is simply to delete them. If you're not sure about the true nature of such an e-mail, right-click on it in your in-box and select "Forward as attachment" to ccalvert@umw.edu, or contact IT Security Director Clay Calvert at 286-8122.
Here is a page that uses a quiz format to help you learn to detect phishing.
