Installing and using Microsoft AntiSpyware  

NOTE: Microsoft Antispyware - Windows Defender Beta2 supports Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 or later, or Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later, or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or later.

Instructions on Downloading and Installing

Step 1: Go to the Microsoft Antispyware page to download Windows Defender Beta2.

Step 2: Click the Download button.

Step 3: You will be required to verify that you are using genuine Windows through a quick and easy online process called validation. Click the Continue button and follow the validation directions.

Step 4: When validation is complete, click Download Genuine Microsoft Software.

Step 5: Click Run in the File Download window.

Step 6: This window might appear, if so click Run again.

Step 7: Follow the Installation Wizard instructions to install Windows Defender. Click Next.

Step 8: Please read the entire License Agreement. If you wish to continue select the I Accept radio button, then click Next.

Step 9: Check the Use recommended settings radio button, then click Next.

Step 10: Choose Complete as the Setup type, then click Next.

Step 11: Click Install to begin the installation.

Step 12: Click Finish to complete the installation.

Instructions on Configuring

Step 1: Once Windows Defender is launched it will perform a Quick Scan for spyware.

Step 2: Follow the instructions for eliminating any spyware that may have been detected on your system. When this is complete, click Tools from the menu bar to configure Windows Defender to scan your system on a regular basis.

Step 3: Select Options from the Settings section of the Tools window.

Step 4: We recommend performing a full system scan daily at a time when your computer will most likely be on. Please choose all options that are chosen in the image below, then click the Save button and close Windows Defender.

Sometimes when software is being installed, Microsoft AntiSpyware will pop up information about changes being made to your computer in the lower right-hand corner of your screen. These are color coded according to their risk, and it is usually best to follow their suggestions, as they can be helpful in preventing spyware from being installed on your computer.
