Student E-Mail FAQ
What follows are frequently asked questions about the Student E-mail system. For a full tutorial in preparation for meeting the Technology Proficiency Requirement, consult the Technology Proficiency Web site>>
Q: How do I check my email?
A: Students may log into http://eaglemail1.umw.edu
, http://eaglemail2.umw.edu ,
or http://eaglemail3.umw.edu using their network ID and password to check
their email.
Q: Can I use Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape Mail or the
like to check my email?
A: No, students do not have access to an email POP3 or IMAP server which is
required for all of those programs.
Q: Can I change my username and password?
A: Students can change their password, but not their NetID. To do so, see the Network Resources Password page; this page will change your password for EagleMail, as well as for all other web-based resources except Blackboard.
Q: EagleMail is down, I can't log in. How can I check my email?
A: There are 3 (three) EagleMail servers. If you can't log into one try the
other two. For example, if http://eaglemail1.umw.edu is down, try logging into
http://eaglemail2.umw.edu or http://eaglemail3.umw.edu, etc. If you still
have trouble logging in, contact the Help Desk at (540)654-2255.
Q: Can I set up rules with EagleMail?
A: EagleMail allows setting up a forwarding rule to have your mail forwarded
to another email address. Here's how to do it>>
Q: Can I save the messages I send to people in a folder?
A: Yes, you can create a Sent Items folder. Here's
how to do it (Teaching and Learning Technologies Tutorial)>>
Q: How much space do I have on EagleMail?
A: Students have a 15MB size limit. When your mailbox reaches 90% of its limit,
you will get a warning message when you log in. If your mailbox becomes full,
messages sent to you will be sent back to the sender with a message sent to
the sender saying your mailbox is full. Students are responsible for making
sure they are within the 15MB size limit. The email server WILL NOT automatically
delete messages that are old.
Q: How large of an attachment can I send through EagleMail?
A: Students can send attachments as large as 5MB. Anything above 5MB will
not be sent.
Q: How long can I stay connected to EagleMail?
A: The EagleMail system is setup to allow up to 15 minutes of inactivity.
After 15 minutes of inactivity, your connection will timeout and you will
be required to log back in to send and view email.
Q: Can I look up other UMW students' as well as faculty and staff
email addresses?
A: Yes. UMW now has two different Address Books: GroupWise Address book and
Student LDAP Address book. To look up students you will use the Student LDAP
Address book and for faculty and staff, you will use the GroupWise Address
book. In EagleMail, the GroupWise Address book is given the checkbox "Public"
in the address book. With that checkbox checked, you can search for faculty
and staff email addresses. See
a tutorial on the address book>>
Q: Whenever I click on an email address link from a webpage, I can't
send an email. How do I fix this?
A: The reason you can't send email when clicking on an email link from a webpage
is because you don't have an "email client" properly configured on your system.
To correct this problem, choose an email client, such as Netscape Mail, Eudora,
Outlook Express, etc., and setup the outgoing mail server as email.umw.edu.
This server DOES require authentication, so choose that as an option when
asked and provide your Network
User ID and password.

set up a group. Here is how>>
However, if you would like to send an email to multiple individuals (up to
75) one time only, without creating a group, simply separate each email address
with a comma and space in the "To" field. The space between email addresses
in not required, but may be easier to read.
