Step 1 - Under the Apple menu, select "Location>Network Preferences."

Step 2 - You will see the Network Preferences Panel opened to the "TCP/IP" tab. At the top of the Network Preferences panel, there will be a drop-down menu named "Location." Select "New Location."

Step 3 - You will be given an option to name your location. We've named this one "UMW Dialup." Click "OK."

Step 4 - Back at the Network Preferences Panel, the next drop-down menu is named "Show." Since you are configuring this for a dial-up connection, you want to show "Internal Modem."

Step 5 - There are three more settings to configure in the panel:

• Set the drop-down menu labelled "Configure" to "Using PPP."
• In the space provided, enter the DNS Server numbers: 199.111.95.11 and 199.111.95.12.
• In the space provided, enter the Search Domains: mwc.edu

Step 6 - Next, select the "PPP" tab, and do the following:

• You may leave "Service Provider" blank.
• At "Account Name," enter your Network User ID with the full context.
• At "Password," enter your Network password, which may differ from your e-mail password.
• At "Telephone Number," enter the dial-up number for UMW. There are three numbers at UMW that you can configure your modem to dial. Each goes to a different bank of modems on campus for a connection. The numbers are 371-1600, 371-3686 and 371-3898 . Pick two, and type the second one into the "Alternate Number" space.
• If it is possible that others will use your computer, do not have the computer remember your password. If you are the only one to use the computer you can save the step of typing your password each time you connect by checking the box next to "Save password."
• Click "Apply Now."

Step 7 - Next, select the "Modem" tab. At the "Modem" drop-down menu, select your modem type. Many OSX machines ship with an Apple Internal Modem, so this is the default.

Step 8 - Set the rest of your preferences the way you would like. The defaults (shown below) will work for most telephone connections, so are recommended. To make connection easier, make sure to check off "Show Modem Status in Menu Bar." When you are done, click "Apply Now."

Step 9 - To connect, click on the little telephone receiver icon in your menu bar, and select "Connect."

The phone will begin dialing. When you are connected, the icon will indicate a connection.

Step 10 - To disconnect, click on the little telephone receiver icon in your menu bar, and select "Disconnect."
