Windows 2000
Step 1 - Click "Start", "Settings", "Network and Dial-Up Connections". You should see a window with icons like the ones below.

Step 2 - Inside the "Network and Dial-Up Connections " box, double-click on "Make New Connection," and click "Next" at the first screen. At the next screen, select on "Dial-up to the Internet," and click "Next."

Step 3 - In the next window, select "I want to set up my Internet connection manually, ..."

Step 4 - In the next screen, click "I connect through a phone line and a modem."
![[screenshot] - selecting modem connection](images/dialup2000/2kphoneline.gif)
Step 5 - At the next screen, you need to enter in a number. There are three numbers available to you, and you may use any one of them. They are: 371-1600, 371-3898, and 371-3686 . I chose 371-1600 but you can enter any one of them. For long distance or toll connections, place "540" in the area code box before the numbers. Click "Next" after you have entered the number. (NOTE: To include all three numbers (one plus two alternates), you will need to complete this installation, and then change the properties. Instructions for this are at the end of this tutorial.)

Step 6 - In the next screen, at "User name," enter your Network User ID WITHOUT the leading period. For example, your "User name" will look like: someone.acaf.staff.mwc - with the appropriate context. For the "Password", either enter your Network password in now (if it is unlikely that someone else will have access to your machine), or you may choose to enter it when you want to connect to the Internet. NOTE: If you choose not to enter your password now, Windows will prompt you to make sure you understand you will be required to put in your password later.

Step 7 - In the next screen, you will be asked to give
your connection a "Connection name". Name it whatever you want, below I chose
to name my connection UMW. Since there are three numbers, you may want to
redo these instructions for each number. In that case, you may want to call
each one something like UMW 1, UMW 2, UMW 3 or whatever you will understand.

Step 8 - In the next screen, click on "No" since you will
not be setting up an Internet mail account now.

Step 9 - In the next screen, you can choose to uncheck
the checkbox if you do not want to connect to the Internet right now. Click
"Finish" after you have made your selection.
