WINDOWS 95/98/ME
(NOTE: UMW no longer supports Windows 95, 98 or ME. These directions are offered as a courtesy for those who may have older operating systems on their home computers. Screenshots below are taken in Windows 98, but settings are the same for all three operating systems)
Step 1 - Starting at your Windows Desktop, right click on "My Computer." Click then on "Properties."

Step 2 - At the top of the "System Properties" box, click on the "Device Manager" tab. Inside the "Device Manager" box, double-click on the entry named "Modem". Make sure you have at least one modem listed under this entry. If you do not have an entry named "Modem", then you do not have a modem and should stop here. If you do have an entry named "Modem", then double-click on the entry named "Network Adapters." Check to see if "Dial-Up Adapter" is listed under "Network Adapters."

Step 3 - If "Dial-Up Adapter" is listed under "Network adapters",
click "Cancel" and skip to Step 6 below.
If "Dial-Up Adapter" is not available, click "Cancel" and right click on "Network
Neigborhood" ("My Network Neighborhood" in Windows ME) on your Windows Desktop,
then click on "Properties."

Step 4 - In the "Network" dialogue box, click "Add", then double-click on "Adapter."

Step 5 - Scroll down the left side of the dialogue box named "Manufacturers" until you find "Microsoft." Click once on "Microsoft" and choose "Dial-Up Adapter" on the right side of the dialogue box name "Network Adapters," click "OK" and then click "OK" at the next dialogue box. You will probably need your Windows Setup CD at this point. After Windows has reconfigured your system and the proper files have been installed, you will be prompted to restart you computer - please do so.

Step 6 - Starting from the Windows Desktop, double-click on "My Computer", then double-click on "Dial-Up Networking", and then double-click on "Make New Connection". At the next dialogue box, type in a name for this connection. It can be anything you want. I chose "UMW" Click "Next".

Step 7 - In the next screen, you will be asked to give put in the phone number for your internet connection. UMW has three phone numbers to choose from. Enter the area code (540) and enter any one of the following three telephone numbers: 371-1600, 371-3898, or 371-3686 . I chose 371-1600, but you can choose any one. For long distance or toll calls, you will need to add a "1" before the area code, if that is required in your area. You may want to redo these instructions for each phone number, making an internet connection for each number. NOTE: you will have to choose a different name for each connection. Click "Next."

Step 8 - In the next screen, click on "Finish."

Step 9 - In order to make a dial-up connection, double-click "My Computer" from the Windows Desktop. Next, double-click "Dial-Up Networking", and double-click on the network connection you configured in the previous steps. (In the above example, we called it "UMW.") At the "User name" field, enter your Network User ID WITHOUT the beginning period. For example, your user name may look like: jdoe.acaf.staff.mwc . For "Password", enter your Network password. Click "Connect" to make the connection.
