How to make a CLEAN ACCESS Connection to the UMW network
What is "CLEAN ACCESS "?
To protect students' computers (and ultimately the network we all share) from viruses and worms,
we have installed a network admissions gateway called "Clean Access."
Clean Access is made of a network system combined with a desktop software application
called "Clean Access Agent ". These two components work together to ensure that all those logging
into the network have sufficient virus protection and system updates
installed to minimize the possibility of infections.
Clean Access is being implemented in residence halls and through the wireless network access for the time
being. The
implementation will continue onto other areas of the campus as the academic
year progresses, and information will be made available throughout the
process.
is this going to be complicated?
The entire process is Web-enabled, so is very easy to use. Last year, the majority of students who arrived on the campus early connected to the network through this new gateway with little or no trouble. The most important thing to remember is to make sure that your computer is clean and updated before you arrive on campus. Here's how to do it:
DO I NEED ANY SPECIAL HARDWARE?
All you'll need to have is the following:
- A computer running Windows 98/ME/XP/2000 or Mac OS X.
- A Cat 5, Cat 5e or Cat 6 network cable (known commonly as an "Ethernet" cable or "RJ-45" connector, it looks like a phone cable, only larger).
- A UMW network jack.
Do I need any special software?
You will need the following software applications which you may already have. If not, they can be obtained on CD-ROM from the Technology Assistance Center in Trinkle Hall:
- Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.1 software
- The latest critical operating system updates
- The Clean Access Agent application (
WINDOWS ONLY).
This can be downloaded through your browser after the initial connection,
per Step 3 below.
HOW DO I CONNECT?
Step 1: NETWORK ACCOUNT
You will need your NetID and Password to begin. If you do not remember your password, please contact the Technology Assistance Center at ext. 2255.
Step 2: PREPARING YOUR COMPUTER FOR CONNECTION
1. DO NOT connect the Ethernet Cable to the network jack before performing
the following checks to remove any bridge configurations and installing
the proper DHCP configuration.
If you have a bridge configured in your network configuration REMOVE
it before connecting to the network. IF YOU DO NOT REMOVE THE BRIDGE, YOU WILL DISABLE YOUR NETWORK JACK AND WILL BE UNABLE TO CONNECT.
2. You should also uninstall any anti-virus application you have installed
other than Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.1. Some other anti-virus
applications are allowed, but unsupported on the UMW network.
3. Configure your computer IP settings for DHCP. Here is how
Step 3: CONNECTING TO THE NETWORK
1. Connect the Cat 5E cable to your computer and the network jack.
2. The steps are a bit different for Mac and Windows:
Windows Users: Open your Internet browser (Internet Explorer 6.0 or Netscape 7.0 or higher) and login. You will be prompted to install the Clean Access Agent if you have not already done so. Install the agent, login to it and follow the instructions. You must have Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.1 installed and updated, as well as the latest critical operating system patches installed, to gain full access through the Clean Access system.
Mac OSX users: Open your Internet browser (Safari or Netscape 7.0 or higher) and login. You will then be able to access the network in the usual way: FTP, Browser, or OSX Server Connection.
