Apple logoConnecting to the UMW Network Servers on Mac OSX

If you are an OSX user on a Mac, you no longer need the Novell NetWare Client or an FTP client to login to the UMW Network and access the servers. Best of all, the method is the same whether you are on- or off-campus!

Note for Off-Campus Users: Make sure you have connected via VPN (faculty and staff only) or have dialed into the University before attempting connection. (NOTE: Students entering UMW in the Fall of 2003 or later may not use the UMW dial-up service. New students need to access the network via dial-up through their own Internet connection. Or they may use Netstorage to access network drives.)

Step 1 - Make sure you are in the "Finder", and go to the "Go" menu, selecting "Connect to Server." (TIP: You can also use the quick key "Command-K.")

Step 2 - You will see a dialogue box which will indicate that your computer is automatically searching for the servers to which it has access. You may then choose a server from the list, or enter a server address if you don't see it on the list. ( NOTE: You'll see that the server name is preceded by "afp://". This stands for "Apple File Protocol". ) When you have selected a server, hit the "Connect" button on the lower right.

Step 3 - You will see a dialogue box, prompting you for your network login and Novell password ( not your Groupwise password ). You need only enter your username—you do not require the full context. When you have entered the information, click the "Connect" button on the lower right.

Step 4 - There will then display a list of directories on the Athens server for you to mount on your desktop. Highlight the appropriate directory, and click "OK."

Step 5 - Now, the network drive will be displayed in an icon on your desktop. Double-click the icon to access the drive's contents:

Repeat the above procedure for each drive you need to mount. (TIP: Always drag the icon to the trash when you are finished with that network connection. There are a limited number of connections available at one time, and keeping a connection open can limit others in connecting to the network. It may also slow performance of your machine if there are many network connections open at once.)
