Description: With hundreds of titles on a variety of media (e.g., laserdisc, DVD, VHS) the University's Non-Print Media Collection comprises many foreign language and classical films, as well as many popular titles. This collection was created initially through a Funds For Excellence grant by a group of faculty, and is now maintained by DTLT in the Language Lab in Combs 211.

Services:

  • Film Check-Out: Titles in the collection are available for check-out, but circulation at this time is limited to faculty members only. DTLT does not have adequate circulation and collection control mechanisms in place at this time to allow students to check out films.

To check-out a film, a faculty member must visit Combs 211 in person. We do not deliver titles or send them via campus mail.

A faculty member may designate a student proxy to check-out film on his or her behalf. If you would like to designate a student proxy, you must fill out the Student Proxy Permission Form and deliver it to Combs 211. Forms are kept on file for one semester.

  • Student Viewings: UMW students may visit Combs 211 during normal operating hours to view any film in the collection. Frequently, faculty may require students in a class to view a title that has been placed on reserve. The film collection itself is not open for browsing by students, but Combs 211 staff can pull any film that a student requests.

Computers are available for DVD viewings; several TV stations are available for VHS and LaserDisc Viewings. In addition, there is one larger television (which plays DVDs and VHS tapes) for small group viewings. Headsets are available to borrow in the lab, but students are also encouraged to bring their own ear buds or earphones to use in the systems.

  • Film Reserve: Faculty members at UMW may put any title in the collection on reserve. Titles on reserve do not circulate, and can only be removed from Combs 211 by the faculty member who has requested the reserve. If you would like to place a title on reserve, please visit Combs 211 or contact Yvonne Stephens by phone at x1367 or by email at ystephen@umw.edu. If you send an email requesting an item be placed on reserve, please be as specific as possible about the title, director, year of production, and how long you will need the item to be on reserve.

  • Chandler 102 Viewings: In collaboration with colleagues in User Services, DTLT also provides services for evening viewings of films from the collection in Chandler 102. Faculty members do not need to be present at these viewings: DTLT staff deliver the media to Chandler 102 prior to the viewing and student aides from User Services attend the viewing in the evening to make sure the equipment is set up and the film is playing properly.

To request a viewing, you must first enter an event on the Chandler 102 calendar. Please follow the instructions on this page and provide all of the indicated information. You will be contacted if there are any questions about your request. Once your request has been approved, it will appear on the calendar as a reservation.

Faculty are STRONGLY encouraged to double-check that the film they are scheduling is available in the collection prior to requesting the reservation. We also STRONGLY recommend placing the title on reserve (to ensure that no other faculty member checks it out prior to the viewing).

  • Requesting New Items: If you discover that you wish to show a title that is not in the collection, you should submit your request directly to Jerry Slezak, acting director of teaching and learning technologies. We require at least three weeks notice for new film orders, to accommodate both vendor shipping times as well as cataloging and campus delivery.

When requesting a new film, please include the title, director, and year of production so that we can guarantee the correct item is purchased.
