Teaching in the Technology Training Center (Clubhouse)

The following questions and answers are most frequently asked from faculty, staff, and students who have used the Technology Training Center (Clubhouse). If you have additional questions please contact Pam Lowery (540/654-1357) or Joanne Piper (540/654-1565).

How do I turn on the teaching station computer (and projector)?
Turn on the video projector with the remote provided, and the Windows computer at the front of the room. When finished, we ask that you turn off the projector to preserve the life of the bulbs.

Why don't the computers all look the same?
We have one configuration for the Windows computers. Between semesters we often reformat the drives and use disk imaging software to update them. Each computer should be about the same as any other in the room so that instruction is not disrupted when users encounter different options as they follow steps from the Instructor. Unfortunately, many computer users insist on changing the settings of the display, the desktop, the screensavers, default home pages, and other settings that are available to them. We ask that you remind your students NOT to change these settings. We usually redo all the settings on these computers between semesters so don't expect the software that you install to be there after the break (you should inform us before installing software).

What software is loaded on the computers?
There is software common to all the computers and there is software that gets installed and removed as the hard disk space is needed or as classes begin and end. Common to all computers is:

  • Microsoft Office
  • Internet Explorer
  • Netscape Communicator
  • SPSS
  • Novell GroupWise
  • Novell NetWare Client
  • All of the Dell computers have the Windows XP Pro operating system.

How do I get additional software loaded on the computers prior to my class?
Only the DTLT staff and student aides are supposed to install software on these computers. Having this policy helps to preserve uniform systems as well as preserving critical network configurations. If you need software installed contact an DTLT staff member. Upon request we will install software for you in preparation for your class session(s). Try to give us as much prior notification as possible, since installing software on 20-30 computers can be time-consuming. A few days notice should suffice. We will ask you about licensing for the software that you need installed.

What if I have a computer that doesn't work?
Moving to a different computer would be the most immediate solution. Leave a note on the inoperable computer with a brief description of the symptom you experienced so that we can try to get the problem fixed. Also, there is a phone behind the projector screen from which an instructor could contact someone in Instructional Technology about a problem that he or she might be having:
