Student Telephone Services
The University's residence-hall telephone system allows long-distance calling using prepaid phone cards or calling cards, although many students find personal cell-phone plans more convenient and economical. If you choose to use a phone card, be sure to read the “fine print” for hidden charges when you select a vendor. Although collect calling is available through the local telephone company, it is at a premium price, and most students use it only in emergency circumstances. Because of varying building materials in the walls of the University's residence halls as well as varying locations of vendor cell towers in the surrounding community, cell-phone reception in residence-hall rooms varies. Be sure to verify the availability and strength of your cell-phone vendor's signal in your residence-hall room before you assume that you can rely on it.
Toll-free calls are made by dialing 9 first to access an outside line, then 1 and the 10-digit toll-free number.
Pre-paid phone-card or calling-card calls are made by dialing 9 first to access an outside line, then 1 and the 10-digit number associated with the card.
On-campus calls can be made by dialing only the last 4 digits of the number.
Local calls outside the University system are made by dialing 9 first to access an outside line, then the 7-digit local number.
The University provides to students
living in campus residence halls Standard Caller ID with these highlights:
- Free to On-Campus Students.
- Caller ID displays number only, no name.
- Only one student per room needs to complete the Caller ID Application Form and submit it to Voice Services via email to helpdesk@umw.edu or drop off at the Help Desk..
- Equipment, such as telephone, telephone with Caller ID or separate Caller ID box, and telephone cable, are not provided.
- Voice Services will activate Caller ID within 3 days of receiving a completed Caller ID Application Form.
* Because of the rapid shift to use of cell phones by students, the University in 2004 discontinued its student long-distance service billing program, and the previously issued 7-digit authorization codes are no longer used.
